Wolf-Dieter Keidel
Wolf-Dieter Keidel (born December 14, 1917 in Gaimersheim ; † January 17, 2011 in Bayreuth ) was a German physician and sensory physiologist.
Life
Keidel studied medicine at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg , the University of Vienna and the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich . In the post-war period in Germany he was an assistant at the physico-medical laboratory of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen until 1947 . He then switched to the Physiological Institute there. As a senior assistant to Otto Friedrich Ranke , he qualified as a professor in 1949. Since 1956 apl. Professor , he was appointed to the chair of physiology in 1961 as Ranke's successor and was appointed director of the Physiological Institute. In 1963 he was the founding president of the German Society for Cybernetics. From 1965 until his retirement in 1986 he was director of the Institute for Physiology and Biocybernetics.
After sonography had been introduced in several medical specialties in the late 1940s , Keidel was the first to produce echocardiographies in 1950 , a cornerstone of today's cardiological diagnostics.
Keidel's main work is based on Georg von Békésy's investigations into hearing. In 1961 he introduced “objective audiometry”, in which “auditory evoked potentials” from the electroencephalography of the waking person are correlated with the sound pressure. With this method, it is possible to demonstrate impairment of hearing in newborns and small children. This method established the early acoustic evoked potentials (Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry) further developed.
Keidel's Brief Textbook of Physiology (1967–1985) has been translated into several languages. It was an important German-language physiology textbook for medical students, which was based on the physico-chemical basics of physiology.
