Wolfgang Angst (also Anxst ; * around 1485 in Kaysersberg , Alsace ; † after spring 1523 ) was a German humanistic philologist and proofreader.

Live and act

Wolfgang Angst was enrolled in the newly founded University of Frankfurt (Oder) in 1506 and obtained his bachelor's degree in the following year . It was there at the latest that he met Ulrich von Hutten , with whom he had a lifelong friendship.

In 1507, Angst worked as a proofreader in Nicolaus Lamparter and Balthasar Murrer's printing works in Frankfurt (Oder) and in 1510 in Strasbourg with Matthias Schürer. In 1514/15 he worked for Heinrich Gran in Haguenau . It is possible that Angst mediated this printing company for the publication of the dark man's letters , which were created in the vicinity of Ulrich von Hutten and Johannes Reuchlin . His other involvement in the texts is unknown. His name was mentioned in the second volume. Soon after it appeared, he sent a copy of the first volume to Erasmus of Rotterdam .

In 1516, Angst worked again in Strasbourg and in 1517/18 in Basel , where he was involved in the publication of some of Erasmus' writings. Since autumn 1518 he and Nikolaus Karbach directed the edition of works by Titus Livius in Mainz on Hutten's initiative, which appeared the following year.

Fear was mentioned for the last time in the spring of 1523.

Ulrich von Hutten described Wolfgang Angst as one of the most skilled humanistic proofreaders in Germany.
