Wolfram Neumann (* 1943 in Schwerin an der Warthe in the province of Brandenburg ) is a German emeritus for orthopedics at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg .

Education and academic career

Wolfram Neumann completed his medical studies at the University of Leipzig and received his doctorate there in 1968. Dr. med. This was followed by a second degree in biochemistry , which he completed in 1972.

Wolfram Neumann worked as a scientific assistant until 1977 and from 1978 as a senior physician at the Orthopedic University Clinic in Leipzig . From 1982 to 1984 he worked as a university professor and head of the orthopedic-traumatology department at the Gondar College of Medical Sciences in Ethiopia . In 1986 he was appointed full professor and director of the Orthopedic University Clinic Magdeburg.

From 1990 to 1993 Neumann was Vice-Rector at what was then the Medical Academy in Magdeburg and, after the university was founded, from 1993 to 1998 Vice Dean of the Medical Faculty of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg . For Dean Professor Neumann was elected in 1998th On October 1, 2000, he took over the role of Vice Dean and was re-elected in 2002 in this office.

In 2001 he was President of the German Society for Orthopedics and Traumatology . From 1990 to 1995 he was an honorary senator of the German Research Foundation (DFG). As part of the “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” foundation , he and his colleagues initiated the Active Solidarity campaign in 2001 - help for former forced laborers . Sick and needy people who had to do forced labor in the Third Reich were operated on at the expense of over a hundred clinics in Germany and Austria . Neumann has been a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina since 1998 and acts as its chairman for orthopedics.

On the occasion of his retirement , Wolfram Neumann held his farewell lecture on March 25, 2010. His successor was Christoph Lohmann , who until then had been the deputy director of the clinic and polyclinic for orthopedics at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf .

Honors

In 1997, Neumann was honored with the August Wilhelm Francke Medal by the Magdeburg Society for his medical and social work . In 2004 he was by the readers of Magdeburg popular vote for "Magdeburg of the Year" selected. In 2004 he received the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class .
