The wool barn , also known as the wolf barn , is a listed ruin in Bad Doberan in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

location

It is located north of Klosterstrasse in the northwestern area of Doberan Monastery .

Architecture and history

The two-story brick building has an elaborate design in the Luebian style of the late 13th century . It may have been created during the time of Abbot Conrad III von Lübeck, who was active from 1283 to 1290 . There were several rooms on the ground floor . Above that was a representative hall floor accessible from the outside . Based on this facility, it is assumed that the house housed distinguished guests of the monastery . Use as a hospice , as a storage facility or accommodation for conversations in the monastery is also discussed. During the late Middle Ages , the building then served as a work and warehouse for the cloth and clothing makers belonging to the monastery. It was later used as a wool manufacture, which probably also led to the name of the house. The manufacture , operated by a stock corporation , started production with 24 looms in 1762 , but was given up again in 1767 . It was then used as a grain barn .

Around 1850 the roof was covered during a storm . The building then fell into disrepair. It is believed that the decay was possibly also deliberately encouraged in order to have a picturesque ruin in the style of an English landscape park .

The northern side wall as well as the western and eastern gable wall were preserved. The floor plan created in this way is 31.8 by 11 meters. The walls are designed as shell masonry with filling material in between. The windows are designed as segmental arches.

The in vernacular common name Wolf barn , could affect the nearby Wolfsberg relate.
