Wollongong Wolves FC is an Australian football club from Illawarra , New South Wales . Until 2004 the club played in the National Soccer League (NSL), currently in the New South Wales Premier League .
history
The South Coast Wolves were founded in 1980 under the name Wollongong. In 2000 the club won the Australian championship for the first time in the final against Perth Glory . Perth were already 3-0 up at halftime, but Wollongong was able to equalize this gap at the end of the game. In the end, the Wolves won 7-6 on penalties.
In 2001 the triumph could be repeated. In the final against South Melbourne FC , Wollongong won 2-1. In the same year, the club also won the OFC Champions League .
In 2007 the board announced that the club would be renamed Wollongong FC.
At the beginning of the season, the club had to be renamed again after it got into financial difficulties despite winning the State League championship in 2008. After a substantial investment of funds, the team was finally able to be registered in the NSW Premier League under the new name Wollongong Community Football Club . A large part of the championship squad had already left the club by then. In November 2009, the name was again changed to South Coast Wolves Football Club . The club has been called Wollongong Wolves FC since 2016 .
