Woodside is a town with about 5,000 inhabitants in Santa Clara Valley ( Silicon Valley ), 18 km south of San Francisco and 22 km north of San Jose , and about 550 km northwest of Los Angeles in California , USA . Woodside is part of San Mateo County and is located in the San Francisco Bay Area .

The urban area covers an area of approximately 18 km², most of which is undeveloped and covered with coastal redwoods . Neighboring cities or towns are u. a. Redwood City , Palo Alto , Stanford and Menlo Park .

The climate is very mild and, thanks to the proximity to the Pacific, the temperature fluctuations are only moderate. The seasons are therefore less pronounced, you could simply combine them into a rainy and a dry season. The average annual temperature is 15 ° C (10 ° C in the rainy season and 20 ° C in the dry season). The maximum temperature at Christmas was measured at 41 ° C. The average annual rainfall is around 400 mm, with 95% of the rainfall registered between October and April.

The place was best known for the Silicon Valley greats who have settled in the past two decades. For example, Larry Ellison , CEO and founder of Oracle, and Gordon Moore , co-founder of Intel, who is best known for Moore's Law that he formulated, lives here . Even Neil Young and Joan Baez are here at home.

history

Long before the Europeans came to explore and colonize this area of California, this was the home of the Ohlone - and Costanoan Indians. Along the streams and wooded valleys, the fresh water of the mountains, the mild climate and the nearby sea, these indigenous people had plenty of food available.

In 1769 a group of explorers, led by Gaspar de Portolà, landed on San Francisco Bay and camped near what is now Woodside. In 1822 Mexico gained independence from Spain and the Spanish land permits, which included what is now California at the time, went into private ownership. Woodside's first English-speaking colonists around 1830 were William Smith , an Oregon fur trader , John Cooper and James Pease and Charles Brown . They all built their first houses and Charles Brown built a sawmill and started making mud bricks in 1839. In 1849 Dr. Robert Orville Tripp, a dentist, moved to this little village and started his own practice. Word of the location, the available lumber and medical care quickly got around and by 1859 Woodside had 112 students enrolled.

Gradually the character of the valley changed. The sawmills were replaced by farms, small cattle ranches and vineyards. In the 1880s, wealthy San Francisco families began building their country homes here. In the 1960s, the city changed fundamentally again and became a typical suburb of a large city.
