action

Adam Petrazelli attends high school and tries to lead a normal life despite his often uncontrollable feelings. After suddenly freaking out one day during class, becoming violent and attacking a classmate, Adam is expelled from school. He and his mother are devastated when he is diagnosed with schizophrenia, and Adam sees his dream of attending cookery school in jeopardy. Concerned about her son's future, she organizes a place for Adam at a private Catholic school, where he is supposed to complete his final year. At the new school, he met Maya and was immediately drawn to her rebellious but charming personality. Through Maya's friendship and a try with a new experimental drug, he hopes to end the year without anyone discovering his mental illness.

production

Words on Bathroom Walls is based on the popular novel of the same name by Julia Walton from 2017. This has received numerous awards, including the Rhode Island Teen Book Award. The title refers to the words Adam sees on the walls and doors of the school toilet in his schizophrenic moments.

Directed by Thor Freudenthal , while Nick Naveda adapted Walton's novel for the film.

Charlie Plummer plays the lead role Adam. The voices Adam hears are brought to life in visual form by actors Lobo Sebastian , AnnaSophia Robb and Devon Bostick . They become characters that were created in his head and with whom he has conversations. The way these three actors are portrayed helps the viewer better understand what it is like for a person to have such a disease and the impact it has on a person's daily life, according to Scott Menzel. Molly Parker plays Adam's mother Beth, Walton Goggins his stepfather Paul and Taylor Russell his new classmate Maya. Beth Grant took on the role of Sister Catherine, the headmistress at Adam's new school, and Andy Garcia played Father Patrick, the local priest.

The shooting took place in Wilmington, North Carolina. Michael Goi acted as cameraman .

Roadside Attractions brought the film to US cinemas on August 21, 2020.

Reviews

The film is rated positively by 82 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics with an average of 7.1 out of 10 possible points.

The writer and Roger Ebert critic Nell Minow describes Adam as a sensitive and personable character, and director Thor Freudenthal transports the viewer with impressive images in his perception of the world, sometimes in the style of a horror film with an inkblot look, but then also through his three companions telling him what to do all the time. Freudenthal has a real talent for working with children and young people, as he has already demonstrated in Diary of a Wimpy Kid , Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters and various episodes of Arrow , Minow said. The chemistry between Charlie Plummer and Taylor Russell is right, Andy Garcia is excellent as a sensitive priest, and Beth Grant gives her role, which could easily have slipped into a cliché, a certain depth.
