action

11-year-old Gregory Heffley recently started attending junior high school with buddy Rupert. There they meet Chirag Gupta, among others, who tells them the story of the curse of the smelly cheese , which has apparently been lying on the school's basketball court for years.

Greg and Rupert piss off some teenagers on Halloween . At school, they also join the student guides. Greg accidentally breaks Rupert's arm in the winter by throwing a ball in front of Rupert's tricycle, which then falls on his arm. Their friendship then breaks because Rupert is punished for an act committed by Greg; he lured the kindergarten children into a ditch and terrified them, so Rupert is initially suspended from the student pilotage service. It later turns out that it was Greg, he gets fired and Rupert promoted. Rupert then befriends Chirag and Angie. When he then demands a computer game back from Greg, the Halloween teenagers reappear and force Rupert to eat the cheese. But above all, Greg claims that he ate the cheese himself. Then they become good friends again.

background

Greg's film diary, written by Jeff Kinney , was released on March 16, 2010 . It includes the complete production including pictures, storyboards and background information. The film was released on DVD and Blu-ray on August 3, 2010. Greg's diary brought in a total of 75,699,227 US dollars .

Differences from the book

  • The cheese finger is taken to California in Alf Hall's book. In the film the matter is resolved when a French exchange student travels back to Toulouse.
  • In the original book, Manni brings Rodrick's magazine to kindergarten, but in the film version he only reads it.
  • You can't read in the book that Greg and Rupert have to eat on the floor in the canteen. Whereby Greg tears the page out of his diary in the film. In the eighth volume this is even refuted.
  • Angie Steadman only appears in the film.
  • Greg actually came up with the idea of drawing “Heissa Mama” comics with Rupert. However, Greg decided to do something else and got the post of comic book artist for the time being. Then Rupert got the job by taking over “Heissa Mama”. In addition, the name of the comics in the film was changed to "Au weia Mama".
  • All the characters that appear in the film have a different name in the German version of the book (e.g. Chirag Gupta → Mike Lerner, Coach Malone → Mr. Underwood). Nevertheless, the English film names were translated into German.
  • After Greg ruined the performance of "The Wizard of Oz", Patty loses her glasses because an apple hit them. Since Patty doesn't wear glasses in the movie, she pushes Greg over instead.
  • In the book, Patty doesn't get the cheese finger, and Rupert hasn't hugged her either.
  • In the book, students need to sing the American national anthem at the audition, in the movie they sing the song Total Eclipse of the Heart of Bonnie Tyler .

Reviews

“And again a teenage comedy that is one thing above all: not funny! This is what you get when you try to turn Jeff Kinney's popular online cartoon series (now a bestseller) into a feature film. What works well as a small sequence of images with a gag, has no charm as a real film and the joke is largely by the wayside. "

“Unlike Jeff Kinney's comics, which have sold over 30 million copies worldwide, the movie doesn't delight adults and children alike. Because the biting humor is completely absent in Thor Freudenthal's clichéd family comedy (part two comes to the cinema on May 26th). Instead, the jokes have been adapted to the age of the main character. The hustle and bustle in the school hallway is reproduced on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in a colorful but blurred manner in places: the picture on the DVD in particular flickers slightly. The 5.1 sound mix of both home theater versions controls all speakers precisely and impresses with the appropriate use of subwoofers - when Greg is blown away by his arch-nemesis Patty (Laine MacNeil), it hurts even while listening. The not very entertaining bonus part contains deleted scenes and an audio commentary. "

“Although some of the actors in Greg's diary are very young, they show their acting talent and make the film worth seeing for adults too. It's not a typical kiddie / teen movie, but something that reminds you of your own youth. After all, everyone had nerds, geeks, or freaks in their class and wanted to be popular. Greg's diary describes this daily 'struggle' in a sensitive, highly amusing way. The world Greg lives in is crazy and wacky and that's what makes the movie so appealing. The use of comic elements from Jeff Kinney's book helps. Is it any wonder that the sequel Rodrick Rules is already being shot? Hardly likely!"
