The 4th table tennis World Cup 1983 took place in Barbados from September 29th to October 3rd . There was only one competition for men. Gold went to Mikael Appelgren from Sweden .

mode

16 athletes took part in the competition, who were divided into four groups of four athletes each. The group first and second advanced to the main round, which was held in knockout mode. The semi-final losers played a game for 3rd place, the quarterfinal losers played for places 5-8, the group third for places 9-12 and the bottom of the group for places 13-16. The game was played with two winning sets, in the main round with three winning sets.

Others

For the first time, all three medals went to players from an association. In the case of men, this did not happen again until 2006 when the Chinese Ma Lin , Wang Hao and Wang Liqin took the first three places. Since 2008 , a maximum of two players per association have taken part in the World Cup (as long as no third is added by a wildcard ).

The 1983 World Cup was also the first and only one in which no Chinese or Asian players made it into the main round.
