The Wormser Ried is a 35.3 hectare nature reserve in the south of the city of Worms .

It comprises several former clarification ponds including the surrounding silting zones , reed beds , remains of alluvial forest and wet meadows . The ordinance on protection was issued on September 20, 1968 by the district government of Rheinhessen .

Protection purpose

The nature reserve, a secondary biotope from the former sewage ponds of the Worms leather industry, has been designated for biotope protection and for bird and amphibian protection. Since it is largely isolated from natural tributaries due to its location between several dams, several restoration work has been necessary in the protected area since it was placed under protection to ensure the protection purpose.

According to the biotope mapping in 2007, there are mainly three plant communities in the area : Phalaridetum arundinaceae , Phragmition australis , Salicion albae . Subordinate sub-areas are allocated to other plant communities. The amphibians and reptiles found in the Wormser Ried include: common frog , moor frog , sea frog , pond frog , small water frog , common toad , common toad , northern crested newt , pond newt and grass snake .

The nature reserve is also part of the FFH area “Rheinniederung Ludwigshafen-Worms” and the landscape protection area Rheinhessisches Rheingebiet .

location

The Wormser Ried is located in the southwest of the Wormser Bürgerweide . In the north-west it borders on the Worms airfield and in the north-east on the federal highway 9, which runs along the dam . In the south it is closed by the Eckbach , which runs between two dams and is also the border between the city of Worms and the Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis .
