The record cover depicts Satan as a horned, fire-breathing dragon who wears a chain with a dog's foot around his neck. The bare ground below is littered with human skulls . The inlay shows a naked man kneeling in front of Satan's altar; this is Vorphalack, the singer and guitarist of the band. The dedication on the back of the LP refers to the father of the Vorphalack and Xytraguptor brothers, who died in 1987.

Texts

The texts are shaped by satanism and occultism :

“At that time I was actually mainly interested in occultism. Everything that wasn't taught in school or in established sciences interested me, so it wasn't the books that ordinary people read that fascinated me. I was looking for the 'completely different'. I don't want to say that I found anything there, but I came across things, with points of view, from which I could use elements for myself. I actually only compiled and put them together. "

- Preph :

Sleep of Death is written from the perspective of death, reminding people that they are fleeting and doomed to die.

Worship Him is about Satan, who is extolled among other things as the flame of the mind, the fire of vengeance and the reason for the existence of the "we" of the poem.

In Knowledge of the Ancient Kingdom is sung that the golden age of witchcraft was over and the dark clouds Necromancer hanging over the ancient kingdom; only a cursed book makes it possible to regain the lost powers and to unite with the power of death. The evocation of Belf, son of Belf, appears three times from Egyptian mythology , which is supposed to give the speaker the power to kill at a distance.

Morbid Metal celebrates morbid Metal that comes from the hidden and dark, such as the depths of the speaker's brain, mass executions, evil oaths and rituals .

The title of the instrumental piece Rite of Cthulhu is reminiscent of the Cthulhu myth of the American writer HP Lovecraft .

The Black Face is about the Last Judgment , when the sun loses its brightness, the rivers and streams flood the cities, and life itself is the worst punishment. On this one Satan is supposed to reveal his hidden side and save his own, while the worshipers of God remain prisoners of their bodies and rot on earth.

Into the Pentagram is about a pentagram that serves as a refuge for the speaker, where he dominates his enemies and leads his own.

Messenger of the Light is written from the perspective of the Light Bringer ( Lucifer ), who is characterized as the opponent of Metatron and who should be seen as the new god.

The last two pieces, Last Benediction and The Dark, are instrumental.

Music genre

The vocals consist of the screeching vocals typical of Black Metal . The riffs are well coordinated, but not repetitive, and the music is mostly slow with only a few quick passages. At that time, Vorphalack, who wrote most of the music and lyrics, was listening to "a lot of Celtic Frost and Bathory , but especially Venom "; accordingly, the album shows influences from punk , hard rock and heavy metal . Frank Albrecht from Rock Hard compared the album stylistically with Asphyx and Bathory and the gloomy mood with the old recordings of the Celtic Frost predecessor band Hellhammer . In retrospect, Vorphalack described the album as “a very primitive record” that “roughly reflected the zenith of our musical ability at the time”.

“It's definitely [i] v not the kind of music I prefer today. It's not enough. Still, I stand by it. As a teenager you are constantly looking for yourself. You want to have your own experiences and such an album is 'Worship Him'. I wouldn't deny it, but today it no longer fits my view of things and Samael. "

- Preph :

reception

The album is considered a classic of Black Metal. Burghardt from METALGLORY Magazine described it as "a dark, vicious Black Metal album, morbid and nihilistic ".

Øystein “Euronymous” Aarseth von Mayhem was enthusiastic about their album and said in Bård G. Eithun's Orcustus - Fanzine that he wished he had spoken to them about a contract with his label Deathlike Silence Productions :

"I've never been talking with Samael about any deal, but I wish I had as their album is FUCKING GREAT."

"I've never talked to Samael about any contract, but I wish I had, as their album is FUCKING GREAT."
