Wrocław-Śródmieście or simply Śródmieście (German city center ) is a district in the center of the Polish city of Wroclaw ; north and northeast of the Stare Miasto district ( old town ).

General

Since 1990 , the smaller districts ( pl.Osiedle ) have gained in importance in Polish local politics , but a district like Śródmieście still has several district authorities such as its own financial authority ( pl.Urząd Skarbowy ), a health department and a police headquarters .

Part of the city district around the former Kaiserstraße (Plac Grunwaldzki) was not destroyed by direct combat operations in 1945 , but rather demolished on the orders of Gauleiter Karl Hanke in order to build an airfield within the besieged city (see Battle of Breslau ). Around 13,000 forced laborers perished. Only one plane took off from the airfield and Hanke escaped with it.

Today the western side of the square is built on with sixteen-story high-rises with a shopping center on the ground floor. The complex, built according to the design of the architect Jadwiga Grabowska-Hawrylak , is popularly known as Manhattan . To the east of the square is the site of the TH Breslau partly with historicizing buildings from the 1910s and 1950s, partly with high-rise buildings.

The districts of Biskupin, Sępolno, Szczytniki, Zacisze and Zalesie are among the preferred residential areas of the city.
