Wurmrausch is a district of the municipality of Birgland in the district of Amberg-Sulzbach in the Upper Palatinate in Bavaria .
origin of the name
The place name Wurmrausch - documented in the Middle Ages as "Wurmriske" and "Wurmrisch" - is a compound name. It consists of the Old High German word “wurm” for “worm”, “snake”, “dragon” and Old High German “risc”, which means “reed, marsh grass”. The compound word can therefore have meant "snake bushes" or something similar. Or maybe it was a plant name, as in many other compounds with the prefix “worm”. The place would then be named after the plants that grew there.
