Yılmaz Şen (* 1943 in Istanbul ; † July 14, 1992 ) was a Turkish football player . Through his many years of work for Fenerbahçe Istanbul , he is very associated with this club. Fan and club members regard him as one of the more important players in club history. With 213 Premier League appearances for Fenerbahçe, he is the player with the twelfth most Super Lig appearances in the club's history. In addition, he also took over the role of team captain at times. Due to his tight man coverage and very physical style of play, he was called Jilet Yılmaz (dt. Yılmaz the blade ) during player times . In the last years of his career, however, he was mostly referred to as Çarli .

Player career

Şen started playing club football in youth from the Istanbul amateur club Yaylaspor . Here he was later included in the squad of the 1st team. From here he moved to the first division club İstanbulspor in 1962 . In the summer of 1963 he was accepted by the head coach Erdoğan Tokol in the professional squad and made his professional debut in the party of September 1, 1963 against Kasımpaşa Istanbul . Until the winter break he played in five other first division games, before he won a regular place at the start of the second half of the season. Towards the end of the season he finally became a Turkish U-21 international. The next two seasons he established himself as a top performer within the team and made it into the Turkish national team thanks to his good performance .

Due to his good performances, he was one of the most sought-after players of the transfer window in the summer. Şen decided to move to Fenerbahçe Istanbul . In his first season for this club, he made it straight away to become a regular player. The first season he missed the Turkish championship with his team, but won the Balkan Cup and the Spor Toto Cup . In the season 1967/68 Şen's team reached the Turkish championship. In addition, the team won the Turkish Cup this season and thus achieved Turkish double winners for the first time in the club's history . Şen played almost all of his team's competitive games this season. The following season Fenerbahçe failed to defend their title. During this season, Şen did not play consistently and came to 18 of a possible 30 league games. This fact continued into the next season. By the winter break, he only played eight games. In the game against Samsunspor on January 4, 1970, he broke his leg and was out for the rest of the season as a result. His team ended the season as champions again and also won the pre-season TSYD Istanbul Cup . For the next three seasons, Şen established himself as a regular player for long stretches, but his team had no chance in the championship and had to watch as arch-rival Galatasaray Istanbul dominated Turkish football with three championships in a row. The only bright spots that could be won in the 1972/73 season were the Prime Minister's Cup and the President's Cup players. It was not until the 1973/74 season that his team found their way back to their old strength. This season the Turkish double was won for the second time in the club's history with the championship and the cup. In addition, the TSYD Istanbul Cup was won before the season. Şen was one of the most important defenders of his team along with Alpaslan Eratlı . However, he had to pause in some games due to injury or suspended. In the next season the title was defended in the championship. In the 1975/76 season , Şen lost, mostly due to injury but also because of a suspension, his regular place and completed 14 of a possible 30 league games over the season. His team won the pre-season TSYD Istanbul Cup, but the second title defense was missed again.

In the summer of 1976 he announced the end of his career. To this end, he first organized a farewell game, in which Fenerbahçe should meet arch-rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul . This farewell game was canceled a few days before the scheduled date after the Fenerbahçe board refused to let their team play against Beşiktaş. Instead, a provisional farewell game against Bursaspor was organized for August 31, 1976 . Finally, with this encounter, Şen said goodbye to the football stage.

National team

During his time with İstanbulspor Şen was nominated in the squad of the Turkish U-21 national team and made his U-21 international debut on May 20, 1964 against the English U-21 national team . In the same year he played two more times for Turkey's U-21s before he was also the focus of the Turkish national team's coaching staff . So he was in the context of a scheduled September 27, 1964 test match against the Polish national team by the then national coach Cihat Arman for the first time in the squad of the Turkish national team . In this game, Şen came on from the start and made his A international debut. From then on he was one of the regularly nominated players until 1969, excluding injury-related losses. Despite his A-internationals, he was repeatedly considered for the U-21 national team until the summer of 1968, although he was already over 21 years old in some games.

He took the senior team at ECO Cup 1967 and ECO-Cup 1969 in part. Both times, Şen and his team won this trophy.

He played his last international game on November 16, 1969 against the national team of the USSR . In total, he played 18 times for the Turkish national team and ten times for the U-21 national team.
