Yanick Dupré (born November 20, 1972 in Montréal , Québec , † August 16, 1997 ibid) was a Canadian ice hockey striker who played for the Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League between 1994 and 1996 .
Career
Yanick Dupré began his career in 1989 in the Canadian junior league Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec with the Voltigeurs de Drummondville . There he presented himself as a good left winger and after the Voltigeurs in the final round at the Memorial Cup was, he was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft selected in the third round at position 50th During the 1991/92 season, he moved within the LHJMQ to the Collège Français de Verdun . When the LHJMQ season was over, he came in the ongoing NHL - season still a commitment to Philadelphia.
He spent the following two years in the American Hockey League with the Hershey Bears , the Flyers' farm team . There he showed solid performances and was finally called up in the 1994/95 season for 22 games in the NHL squad, but could neither score nor book an assist for himself.
1995/96 he had his best season and scored 56 points in 52 games as one of the strongest scorers of the Hershey Bears AHL. He was also able to score two goals in twelve NHL games with the Flyers.
Towards the end of the season, Dupré fell into a three-week coma in March 1996 and was diagnosed with leukemia during subsequent examinations . Weakened by the coma, he could hardly move at first, but over time that stabilized again. He was undergoing chemotherapy, and in the fall, doctors told him that the cancer had disappeared from his body. Dupré started training again. He also got involved in leukemia foundations by collecting money, auctioning shirts and ice hockey sticks signed by his teammates and informing the public about blood cancer and bone marrow donations .
In May 1997, an examination found that the cancer had returned to Dupré's body, this time in a more acute form. Dupré had to rely on a bone marrow donation that he received in June. He fell into a coma again in August and finally died on August 16, 1997 at the age of 24.
In memory of Yanick Dupré, the AHL created the Yanick Dupré Memorial Award , which has been presented every year since 1998 to the player who has distinguished himself through special commitment to society. The Philadelphia Flyers renamed the Class Guy Award , which honored the player on the team who had the best relationship with the media, to the Yanick Dupré Memorial Class Guy Award , which has honored the Flyers player since 1999, the character , Dignity and respect best demonstrated on and off the ice.
