The Yeni Adana Stadyumu ( German  New Adana Stadium ) is a football stadium under construction in the Sarıçam district of the Turkish city of Adana in the south of the country. It will be the new home ground of the two football clubs Adanaspor and Adana Demirspor and will replace the 5 Ocak Fatih Terim Stadı from 1938. The facility should be opened in 2016, the construction is still waiting for its completion and opening in August 2020.

history

The construction is part of a large construction project in which over 20 stadiums are to be built across the country. No new stadium was opened from 1980 until the opening of the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in 2002. After the completed Türk Telekom Stadyumu (2011) and the Mersin Arena (2013), further new buildings with 25,000 to 40,000 seats should follow. The Toplu Konut İdaresi Başkanlığı (TOKİ, German  State Housing Authority ) is responsible for the construction. The old stadiums in the city centers are being replaced by buildings on the outskirts. After the demolition, the old building site will be sold by TOKİ. The site of the Ali Sami Yen Stadyumu from 1964 achieved a price of 250 million euros . Galatasaray's new stadium , the Türk Telekom Stadyumu, cost less than half at EUR 120 million.

In 2014, construction of the new stadium began ten kilometers north of the city center. The new venue should be opened in 2016. The date was postponed from 2017 to 2018 and early 2019. November 2019 was given as the beginning to mid-2020. The stadium was to open in 2015 after the construction project was presented. However, this was soon discarded as construction had only begun the year before. An estimated 25 percent of the construction was completed in mid-2015. There were 250 workers on the construction site, the number should be doubled to 450 to 500. By the end of 2016, most of the concrete work and the compression ring for the cable network construction of the roof were in place, but not completed. There was hardly any progress on the construction site in 2017, although the opening for the 2017/18 season and then for 2018 was promised. In October 2018, construction progress was 90 percent. Almost the whole year was spent on the construction of the roof and the facade. This contradicts the statements that work will be carried out on the construction site around the clock. The AKP politician Jülide Sarıeroğlu promised the fans of the two football clubs that they could enter the stadium in early 2019, but this deadline also passed. In January 2019, the degree of completion was 97 percent, although no major work was carried out except for the roof and facade. At this point, Mustafa Karslıoğlu from the Adana Public Contractors Association assured the community that there would be only two more months of delays, which would allegedly arise due to the long import times for the building materials for the roof and facade. In November 2019, the concrete work as well as the roof and the net-like facade were completed, but almost all the stadium equipment was missing. The CHP politician Müzeyyen Şevkin even raised the issue in the Turkish parliament , but the authorities responsible did not respond. There are even (rather joking) conspiracy theories about the delays. So it should be a punishment of the ruling AKP for the lack of support in the local elections. Or that big projects in Adana never go as planned. Or that someone wanted Adanaspor and Adana Demirspor to relegate before the stadium opened. The real reasons are more economic and bureaucratic factors. The construction project was partly fought with building materials and specialists from abroad, while the Turkish lira fell sharply in value. More than one unit is involved in the construction. Construction began under TOKİ, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports is now responsible for it. The ministry should provide tenders for the missing equipment such as the playing field, seats, floodlights , public address system and landscaping. Winners should deliver within 100 days. This would have meant an opening in early to mid-2020.

The installation of the plastic seats started in March 2020. The seats on the lower tier are red and white like a mosaic. On the upper tier, red seats represent flames on a white background. Since two clubs use the stadium, the club colors of the competing clubs, orange and blue , are not used. In mid-July 2020, the installation of the hybrid turf pitch began. First the artificial turf fibers were set in the ground, covered with a thin layer of earth and the lawn sown on top. There is lawn heating under the lawn . Nevertheless, it is unlikely that the Yeni Adana Stadyumu will be ready for the start of the 2020/21 season. The third contract at the end of 2019 gave contractors 100 days to deliver the equipment. At the end of July of that year, a large number of seats were still missing from the stands. At the start of the season, which is expected to take place in September 2020, the soccer arena will not be able to be completed in the remaining six to eight weeks.
