Sabu Toyozumi
Sabu Toyozumi ( Japanese 豊 住 芳 三郎 , Toyozumi Yoshisaburō ; * 1943 in Tsurumi , Yokohama ) is a Japanese jazz and improvisation musician ( percussion , drums ).
Live and act
Sabu Toyozumi played in a marching band from 1957 before he decided to work as a professional musician in 1965. His career began in the rock band The Samurais , with whom he also toured Europe. In the late 1960s he turned to free jazz , played a. a. 1970 in Paris with Glenn Spearman , with Motoharu Yoshizawa in Masayuki Takayanagi's group New Direction and in a duo with Mototeru Takagi . With the large-format New Herd by Toshiyuki Miyama , he was involved as a jazz drummer in the same year on recordings of Charles Mingus , but also of Masahiko Togashi and Stomu Yamashita ; he also recorded with Masahiko Satoh .
In 1971 he worked in Chicago for the AACM ; In 1972 he stayed in Paris and played a. a. in Anthony Braxton's Creative Orchestra , with Alan Shorter , Bobby Few and with Bob Reid's band Emergency . In the mid-1970s he founded the formation Sabu Unit , in the following years he also played with Kaoru Abe , Tetsu Saitō , Kazuko Shiraishi , Masahiko Togashi and Kazuo Ōno ; he was also involved in several albums by New Jazz Syndicate . In 1982 he appeared with Peter Brötzmann , the following year with Toshinori Kondo , and 1985 with Lester Bowie . In 1984 he made a guest appearance with the East Asia Orchestra on the Berlin Jazz Stage . In 1987 he toured Europe with Johannes Bauer , Peter Brötzmann and Hans Reichel . In Japan he has performed with Misha Mengelberg , Derek Bailey , Wadada Leo Smith , Paul Rutherford , John Russell and Sunny Murray . In later years he worked a. a. also with Louis Sclavis , Yūji Takahashi , Evan Parker , Lol Coxhill , John Butcher , Veryan Weston and John Zorn . In the field of jazz he was involved in 45 recording sessions between 1970 and 2001.
