Yttrium fluoride is a chemical compound of yttrium from the group of fluorides with the empirical formula YF 3 .
Extraction and presentation
Yttrium fluoride can be prepared from the reaction of fluorine with yttrium oxide or from yttrium hydroxide and hydrofluoric acid .
properties
Yttrium fluoride has a refractive index of 1.51 at 500 nm and is transparent in the range from 193 nm to 14,000 nm (i.e. from the UV to the IR range).
Pure yttrium can be obtained from yttrium fluoride by reduction with calcium .
Yttrium fluoride crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system , space group Pnma (space group no. 62) , with the lattice parameters a = 6.3537 Å , b = 6.8545 Å, c = 4.3953 Å. Yttrium is coordinated nine times by fluorine atoms.
use
It is used as a raw material for the production of pure yttrium or other yttrium compounds, as well as a material for thin films, glasses and ceramic materials.
Other yttrium fluorides
The compounds yttrium (I) fluoride, YF (CAS number: 13981-88-9) and yttrium (II) fluoride, YF 2 (CAS number: 13981-89-0) are extremely unstable and only in the gas phase known.
