Yucca angustissima subsp. toftiae (English common name "Toft Yucca") is a subspecies of the plant species Yucca angustissima in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).
description
Yucca angustissima subsp. toftiae grows solitary. The green leaves are 25 to 60 cm long and 0.5 to 1.8 cm wide.
The inflorescence with a height of 1.5 to 4 meters is characteristic, in contrast to the subspecies angustissima and kanabensis with shorter inflorescences. The pendulous, bell-shaped, spherical, white to cream-colored flowers are 3 to 4.5 cm in length and 2 to 3 cm in diameter. The flowering time is in May.
Yucca angustissima subsp. toftiae is frost hardy to minus 20 ° C in Central Europe . It is rarely found in collections.
distribution
Yucca angustissima subsp. toftiae is distributed in the US state of Utah on sandstone hills at altitudes between 1200 and 1400 meters. This subspecies is endemic there and grows in association with various cacti species, such as Sclerocactus parviflorus .
Systematics
The botanical name was chosen after the American botanist Catherine Ann Toft. The valid description by Fritz Hochstätter under the name Yucca angustissima subsp. toftiae was published in 1998.
Synonyms are Yucca toftiae S.L.Welsh 1975 and Yucca angustissima var. Toftia Reveal 1977.
