Yucca rigida is a species of palm lily ( Yucca ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).
description
The trunk-forming Yucca rigida reaches a height of 2 to 5 meters. Characteristic are the blue, toothed, variable, stiff, 30 to 60 centimeters long leaves . The upright or slightly inclined inflorescence , which begins between the leaves, becomes 60 to 120 centimeters long.
Yucca rigida belongs to the Rupicolae series and is closely related to Yucca rostrata , but in contrast to it has softer, falling leaves.
Yucca rigida can withstand temperatures down to –18 ° C when it is dry. Specimens are in Albuquerque , New Mexico and an old specimen with a 3 meter high trunk can be admired in Erzhausen , Germany.
distribution
Yucca rigida is distributed in Mexico between the Sierra Madre Oriental and Sierra Madre Occidental in the states of Chihuahua , Coahuila and Durango at altitudes of up to 1,600 meters. It grows together with Yucca decipiens , Yucca species, Agave stricta and various cactus species.
Systematics
The first description by the American botanist Georg Engelmann under the name Yucca rupicola rigida was published in 1873. The American botanist William Trelease presented the species under the species name Yucca rigida , which is valid today . The description was published in 1902. The species Yucca rigida is placed within the genus Yucca in the Chaenocarpa section of the Rupicolae series .
