The ZIL-MMZ-555 ( Russian ЗИЛ-ММЗ-555 ) is a construction tipper from the Soviet and later Russian manufacturer Mytishchinsky Maschinostroitelny Sawod (MMZ for short) in Mytishchi . It uses the chassis of the ZIL-130 and was located between the smaller GAZ-93 and the larger MAZ-503 . Series production began in 1964 and did not end until 30 years later at the beginning of 1995, because the Sawod imeni Lichatschowa gave up production of the ZIL-130 in 1994 and no more chassis were supplied. Some vehicles of this type also came to the German Democratic Republic .
Vehicle history
The Mytishchinsky Maschinostroitelny Sawod (translated into German Mytishchin machine building ) began manufacturing dump trucks in 1947. Initially, the vehicles were based on the chassis of the ZIS-5 and later, referred to as ZIS-MMZ-585 , on the ZIS-150 and then on the ZIL-164 . The Zavod imeni Lichatschowa, for its part, switched production to the new ZIL-130 from 1962 , so that a new chassis was also available for the tippers from Mytishchi. The series production of the new model ZIL-MMZ-555 began after construction and testing in 1964.
The truck was designed for a payload of 4500 kg and uses the ZIL-130D1 chassis . The entire drive train and driver's cab are also from him. The chassis has a shorter wheelbase than the standard truck to make the truck more manoeuvrable. MMZ added the complete hydraulic system and its control as well as the subframe and the tipping body attached to it. The latter is half-oval in shape, which is also the characteristic feature of the truck. All later types had rectangular constructions or at least smooth floors. The loading volume of the trough is relatively small at three cubic meters, as the truck was designed for heavy bulk goods such as sand . Later other vehicles with larger bodies for light agricultural cargo were also manufactured. From 1966 the slightly revised chassis ZIL-130D1-66 was used. The first generation of trucks was produced almost unchanged until 1977.
In April 1977 production was switched to new chassis of the type ZIL-130D1-76 . This step made it possible to increase the payload to 5250 kg. They were used until 1986 and then replaced by the type ZIL-495810 , which changed little in terms of design, but which was renamed in accordance with current Soviet standards . This substructure was used until the end of production. ZIL ceased production of the ZIL-130 on December 30, 1994, while MMZ assembled vehicles from leftover parts until the beginning of 1995. With the ZIL-MMZ-4502, a model with a rectangular tipping body and a slightly higher payload was also built for the construction industry since 1975/76 . In the late 1980s, the ZIL-MMZ-4505, a new vehicle with a loading area similar to that of the ZIL-MMZ-555, went into series production.
The ZIL-MMZ-555 was exported to various countries, including the People's Republic of Poland and the GDR . There it was one of the few civilly used versions of the ZIL-130 and served, among other things, from 1964 in mining at the SDAG Wismut .
Model variants
There were different versions of the ZIL-MMZ-555, not all were manufactured in series.
- ZIL-MMZ-555 - basic variant, built from 1964 to the beginning of 1995. The chassis used changed several times.
- ZIL-MMZ-555A - Version for operation with tipping trailers. Accordingly, an additional hydraulic connection was installed at the rear and the control elements in the cab expanded. The hydraulic pump has also been modified. Built from 1968 to 1995.
- ZIL-MMZ-555A1 - As ZIL-MMZ-555A, but for use with normal trailers. The additional hydraulics were omitted, only a prototype was built.
- ZIL-MMZ-555G - model with extension boards and an increased loading capacity of 4.25 m³. Probably only built in small series around 1970, a few hundred copies are assumed.
- ZIL-MMZ-555G1 - As ZIL-MMZ-555G, but for use with normal trailers. The additional hydraulics were omitted, only a prototype was built.
- ZIL-MMZ-555GA - As ZIL-MMZ-555G, but also equipped for trailer operation. Also only produced in small series.
- ZIL-MMZ-555K - Like the basic version, but equipped with the in-line six-cylinder engine of the ZIL-157 . Built from 1974 to 1995, over time the same modifications were made as to the basic version.
- ZIL-MMZ-555Sch - Prototype with enlarged tipping skip with 4.5 m³ loading volume. As the vehicle frame proved to be not stiff enough and the chassis should not be changed, production was not started. Later, an almost identical vehicle was built in series with the agricultural tipper ZIL-MMZ-4502.
- ZIL-MMZ-555P - model variant for export to the People's Republic of Poland . There the vehicle should be used for industrial purposes.
- ZIL-MMZ-555PL - In the course of the development work in the 1960s, a vehicle with a tipping body made of fiberglass was also built. The tests were successful, the weight savings increased the payload by 200 kg, the material thickness of the trough was 10 to 12 mm. However, since other Soviet vehicles had bad experiences with the material and the increase in payload was low, series production was not carried out.
- ZIL-MMZ-555T - Model for export to countries with tropical climates.
- ZIL-MMZ-555E - Russian ЗИЛ-ММЗ-555Э, designed for export to temperate climates.
- ZIL-MMZ-555 natural gas vehicle - An official name was never known, and there was no series production. However, there were prototypes with the chassis of the ZIL-138, a variant of the ZIL-130 built for operation with natural gas. In practice, such vehicles were later "manufactured" in-house by converting the ordinary ZIL-MMZ-555 to run on natural gas (see photo on the right).
