The ZIS-MMZ-585 ( Russian ЗИС-ММЗ-585 ) is a construction tipper made by the Soviet manufacturer Mytishchinsky Maschinostroitelny Sawod (MMZ for short) in Mytishchi . It uses the chassis of the ZIS-150 and was located between the smaller GAZ-93 and the larger MAZ-205 . Series production began in 1949, from 1957 the trucks were designated as ZIL-MMZ-585 and were based on the chassis of the modernized ZIL-164 . Various model variants of the tipper were built in series up to 1965, some of which were imported into the German Democratic Republic .

Vehicle history

The same construction site with another ZIL-MMZ-585 and an excavator (1962)

The Mytishchinsky Maschinostroitelny Sawod (translated into German Mytishchin machine building ) began manufacturing dump trucks in 1947. Initially, the vehicles were based on the chassis of the ZIS-5 and were designated as ZIS-05. In 1949, production was switched to the new ZIS-MMZ-585 vehicles, which received the chassis, cab and drive train of the ZIS-150 . The Sawod imeni Stalina called the supplied chassis, which was built especially for tipper production from 1949, as ZIS-120G. It differed from the basic version ZIS-150 primarily in that the frame was shortened by 714 mm. In contrast to later models, the wheelbase was left with the long version (four meters).

The truck was designed for a payload of 3500 kg, which is 500 kg less than the ZIS-150 with a flatbed. The reason was the significantly heavier structure of the tipper. MMZ added the complete hydraulic system and its control as well as the subframe and the tipping body attached to it. The latter is welded from sheet steel and has a relatively small volume of 2.4 cubic meters, as the truck was intended for work on construction sites and thus for heavy or dense bulk goods. The maximum tilt angle of the skip is 48 °. Later other vehicles with larger bodies for light agricultural cargo were also manufactured. In the early years, vehicles with cabs made of wood and metal were made, later they were given an all-metal body.

In May 1955, production was switched to the model variant ZIS-MMZ-585W. This brought several innovations with it. On the one hand, the truck was adjusted to the agricultural ZIS-MMZ-585E, except for the tipping body, in order to have to produce fewer different parts. On the other hand, the entire hydraulic system was revised. This affected the control levers, the hydraulic cylinder that moves the trough and the power take-off, the hydraulic pump . Further revisions were made in 1956, but they were less extensive. In the same year, the de-Stalinization began , the Sawod imeni Stalina was renamed Sawod imeni Lichatschowa . Accordingly, the type designation of the vehicles changed from ZIS-MMZ-585W to ZIL-MMZ-585W. The literature from this transition period still knows both names, later books also name the models before 1956 (intentionally) ZIL-MMZ-585, although they were not called that at the time of production.

The ZIL-MMZ-585W was built under this name until 1957 and then replaced by the ZIL-MMZ-585I. This tipper uses the chassis of the ZIL-164 , which also replaced the ZIS-150 in the Sawod imeni Lichatschowa in 1957. For the tipper, the frame was again shortened by around 70 centimeters and the chassis produced in this way was called the ZIL-164G. Visually, the models differed mainly in the modified radiator grille, now with vertical instead of horizontal struts as before. The machines were produced until 1961 and then replaced by the ZIL-MMZ-585K. This last variant received the chassis ZIL-164AG with a more powerful engine and was built until 1965. The successor was the ZIL-MMZ-555 .

In addition to MMZ, the Georgian Kutaiski Avtomobilny Zavod (KAZ for short) also built a very similar truck. From 1952 to 1965, the plant produced a total of eight variants of the truck in a very similar sequence, initially designated as the KAZ-585 and later as the KAZ-600 . The tippers looked very much alike, but in some cases differed considerably in terms of construction.

The ZIS-MMZ-585 was exported to various countries, including the GDR from the early 1950s . There it was used with various superstructures in dams and road construction, it was also used in agriculture and industry. A few copies of the successor ZIL-MMZ-555 were also imported.

Model variants

There were different versions of the ZIS-MMZ-585, not all were manufactured in series.

Construction tipper

  • ZIS-MMZ-585 - Basic variant based on the ZIS-150, built from 1949 to 1955. The shortened chassis corresponds to that of the ZIS-120G.
  • ZIS-MMZ-585W - From 1955 manufactured and revised basic version, which was unified with the agricultural ZIS-MMZ-585E. Built until 1957, then replaced by the ZIL-MMZ-585I.
  • ZIL-MMZ-585I - From 1957 to 1961 based on the new chassis ZIL-164G as a construction tipper. During the production period there were minor changes to the taillights and the tilt mechanism.
  • ZIL-MMZ-585L - Successor to the ZIL-MMZ-585I, based on the revised chassis ZIL-164AG. Built from 1961 to 1964, in 1965 a few examples were built on new chassis in the transition to the ZIL-MMZ-555.
  • ZIS-MMZ-585L for gas operation - prototype built in 1963 based on the ZIL-166G for operation with gaseous fuels. It is not known whether a separate type designation was given for the vehicle.
  • ZIL-MMZ-553 - The vehicle was provided with a closed trough in order to be able to transport mixed concrete over short distances (up to approx. 15 km) on large construction sites. The first examples were built in 1961 and delivered to the construction site of the Assuan Dam , later the model was also used on construction sites within the USSR.
  • MMZ-589 - prototype of a three-way dump truck for operation with similar trailers and a payload in truck operation of 7000 kg. Developed in 1955, never went into production.

Agricultural vehicles

  • ZIS-MMZ-585SCh - First agricultural tipper based on the ZIS-MMZ-585, built in 1954 and 1955. The loading area was designed for 4.4 m³ of cargo with the same payload (3.5 tons) and made entirely of wood .
  • ZIS-MMZ-585E - Agricultural tipper with a large body made of sheet steel, built from 1955 to 1957.
  • ZIL-MMZ-585K - Manufactured on the basis of the ZIL-164G chassis from 1957 to 1961 as the successor to the ZIS-MMZ-585E.
  • ZIL-MMZ-585M - Built from 1961 to 1964 on the basis of the revised ZIL-164AG chassis, with numerous smaller technical innovations, including a new power take-off for tipping the skip. In 1965, similar to the ZIL-MMZ-585L, transition variants to the successor were built.
