Zacharias Grape (the elder)

Zacharias Grape (the elder) (* 1637 in Teterow ; † August 12, 1679 in Rostock ) was a German Lutheran theologian. He worked as a professor of logic as well as physics and metaphysics at the University of Rostock .

education and study

Zacharias Grape was the son of the eponymous mayor of Teterow. He had his son enrolled at the University of Rostock as early as 1645. In fact, Zacharias Grape first attended school in Güstrow from 1649 and from 1653 the pedagogy in Stettin .

He began studying in Rostock, Leipzig and Wittenberg in 1656. In Wittenberg, Grape received his master's degree , but it is not known exactly when.

academic career

From 1664 Grape worked as a lecturer at the University of Rostock. As early as 1666, he was appointed full professor of logic by Duke Christian Ludwig I , succeeding Matthias Wasmuth . In May 1667, Grape received a licentiate in theology from the University of Greifswald and then also gave lectures at the theological faculty of the University of Rostock.

From 1671 Grape was pastor at St. Katharinen , from 1675 at St. Petri in Rostock. In between, namely in 1672, Grape was appointed Professor of Physics and Metaphysics by the Rostock City Council. His predecessor in this office was Hermann Becker . In the same year he resigned the ducal professorship for logic, and Franz Wolff succeeded Grape .

From 1677 Grape also held the office of superintendent of the Mecklenburg church district in Wismar and was at the same time a member of the ducal consistory. Two years later, in 1679, Grape was to receive the ducal professorship for theology, and in Greifswald was also awarded Dr. theol. doctorate, but died on August 12, 1679 in Rostock, without being able to work in this office.

family

Grape was since 1667 with Margarethe König, geb. Rhau, widow of the late Rostock theology professor Johann Friedrich König and daughter of Balthasar Rhaw (II.) , Married. His son Zacharias Grape (1671–1713), called the Younger, was professor of theology at the University of Rostock.
