Zafar Ishaq Ansari

Zafar Ishaq Ansari (born December 27, 1932 ; died April 24, 2016 in Islamabad , Pakistan ) was an eminent Pakistani Islamic scholar and academic. He was General Director of the Islamic Research Institute (IRI) of the International Islamic University (IIUI) in Islamabad, was formerly President of the IIUI and taught at various universities, including internationally. He was "Academic Advisor" at the US International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Zafar Ishaq Ansari was born on December 27, 1932. His father was Maulana Zafar Ahmad Ansari (1908–1991), also a renowned Islamic scholar who was a close friend and confidante of Maulana Abul Ala Maududi . Zafar Ishaq Ansari is the author of numerous books and articles magazines of international repute in the fields of history, religion and social sciences. He held numerous functions in Islamic organizations and institutions.

Zafar Ishaq Ansari was active in the Jamiat-e-Talaba , the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami , Pakistan , of which he was also president. His close colleagues included Khurshid Ahmad and Khurram Murad , who were lifelong friends and worked together on a number of scientific projects. Ansari had a solid education and was well versed in both Eastern and Western Islamic intellectual traditions. He received his early education under his father and received his first degree in economics from Karachi University . He later earned a doctorate ( Ph.D. ) from McGill University in Montreal , Canada , where he was one of the "early products" of the Institute of Islamic Studies (IIS) at McGill University, founded by Wilfred Cantwell Smith (1916-2000) . He later taught at the University of Karachi , Princeton University ( USA ), King Abdulaziz University ( Jeddah ), King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals ( Dhahran , Saudi Arabia ) and the International Islamic University in Islamabad . He was the editor of the quarterly journal Islamic Studies and served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Islamic Studies , American Journal of Islamic Social Sciences , Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs , Journal of Qur'anic Studies and Studies in Contemporary Islam . He is also a member of the international scientific committee, which was appointed by UNESCO for the academic supervision of its 6-volume work (in the series General and Regional Histories ) on the different aspects of Islamic culture ( The Different Aspects of Islamic Culture ) Co-editor of their first volume, The Foundations of Islam, on the fundamental ideas of Islam . He wrote articles for the Encyclopaedia Britannica and the Encyclopaedia of Religions . He is working on the editing and translation of Maududi's Tafhim al-Qur'an under the title Towards Understanding of the Qur'an ( Islamic Foundation , Leicester ); ten volumes of which have appeared so far (Leicester, 1988–2010). In 2006 the Islamic Foundation published an abridged version of this in a volume in its English translation under the title " Towards Understanding the Qur'an ".

At the IIUI he was Dean of the Faculty of Shariah and Law and Director General of the Islamic Research Institute (IRI). He was a former member of the International Advisory Board of the Center for Islamic Sciences (CIS). He was a member (Senior Fellow) of the Royal Aal-al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought (Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought; abbreviation RABIIT). He was one of the signatories of the Amman Message ( Amman Message ).

Zafar Ishaq Ansari died on April 24, 2016 at the age of 84 as a result of a heart attack in Islamabad, Pakistan.
