geography

location

Zell is located in a valley of the Schweinfurt Rhön (Hesselbacher Bergland) , one and a half kilometers west of Üchtelhausen and five kilometers north-northeast of Schweinfurt . The district road SW 30 running through the village leads south through the Zeller Grund to Schweinfurt and north to Weipoltshausen . State road St 2280 runs 500 m east of the outskirts of Zell in a north-south direction .

The Zellergrundbach runs right through the village . On the partly steep slopes around the old town center there are small new building areas in preferred residential areas.

Hydrology

Due to the pronounced valley location, there have been repeated floods in the past. A flood dam was therefore built north of the village at the confluence of the Jeusinggrund and the Weipoltshäuser Grund .

history

Territory of the imperial city of Schweinfurt until 1802 (dark yellow) with Zell in the central north

The first known documentary mention of the place comes from the year 823. The village of Lauerbach , located in the district of Zell, became deserted in 1425 at the latest .

In 1437 the council of the imperial city of Schweinfurt acquired Zell together with the neighboring Weipoltshausen and other villages and lands for a total of 18,000 guilders . The inhabitants of these places were subjects of the imperial city and as a rule had no citizenship . Since Schweinfurt joined the Reformation in 1542 , Zell also became Protestant. In 1717 the evangelical church of the place was built. Through the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss the Reichsstadt Schweinfurt came to Bavaria in 1802 and Zell was spun off from Schweinfurt as an independent municipality.

On May 1, 1978, as part of the Bavarian regional reform , Zell became a district of Üchtelhausen , a new large municipality that includes almost the entire western Schweinfurt Rhön , with town hall in Hesselbach .

Buildings

The ensemble of the village church ( Matthäuskirche ) and the rectory is located on a hill above the town center . The old rectory in Friedhofstrasse was built in 1604 and is one of the oldest Protestant rectories in Bavaria.

Nature and recreation

Zell is located in the local recreation area of Schweinfurt and is integrated into the hiking trail network of the Schweinfurt Rhön. The National Natural Heritage (NNE) Brönnhof (since 2016) is located near to the north of the village in a former US military training area of the US Army Garrison Schweinfurt (until 2014 ). It is the largest natural heritage area in Bavaria and is located within the largest unpopulated area (approx. 25 km²) of the Schweinfurt Rhön. Zell is the starting point for hikes through the Jeusinggrund to Brönnhof and into the large Jeusungen forest area , which is up to 417 m above sea level.
