City bus stop on Adenauerallee
The striking new roof of the ZOB Hamburg

The Central Bus Station (ZOB) Hamburg is the central stop for intra-German and cross-border long-distance bus services from, to and via Hamburg . It is also known as the Bus Port Hamburg . It is located in the St. Georg district on Adenauerallee directly southeast of the main train station . At the beginning of the 2000s it was completely redesigned, the buildings from the post-war period of 1950/1951 were replaced by a new one. The design for the new central bus station was the result of an international architectural competition. It appears in the cityscape as a large, translucent roof that hovers over the site. This roof, illuminated at night, becomes the signet of the new ZOB that can be seen from afar and gives it an unmistakable appearance.

The approximately circular roof stands on a colonnade following the arch of the bus platform and protrudes far towards the street. It is formed by a sickle-shaped ring girder with connected cantilever girders and stands on 21 slender pillars 11 m high. A large glass roof is attached underneath. With a length of 170 m and a stub of 29 m, an area of 3,400 m² is covered.

The bay-like arrangement of the bus platforms was implemented here for the first time in Germany. The facility, now operated in a clockwise direction , was opened on May 24, 2003.

In 2006 the building, the client and the planners, the architecture office ASW Architekten Silcher, Werner and Redante from Hamburg and the engineering office Schlaich Bergermann und Partner from Stuttgart received the “ Outstanding Structure Award ” from IABSE .

numbers

In 2013 there were 38,830 departures at Hamburg's ZOB, which were used by an estimated 3 million passengers. The connection with the greatest demand is the one to Berlin , which was offered over 30 times a day in spring 2014.

Connection to public transport

The ZOB has direct access to the mezzanine floor of the Hauptbahnhof Süd underground station ( underground lines U1 and U3 ). This can also be used to reach the main train station, which is around two to three minutes' walk away, by long-distance and regional transport as well as the S-Bahn .

The ZOB is also served by the Metrobus lines 5 and 19, which are integrated into the HVV , the express bus lines 31, 36 and (temporarily) 37, the express bus line X35, the city bus lines 120, 122, 124 and 224 and the night buses 606, 608, 609 and 619 served.

operator

The operator of the ZOB is the central bus station "ZOB" Hamburg GmbH , the majority of which is owned by the city's own Hamburger Hochbahn AG . Also, the transport company Hamburg-Holstein (VHH) is involved in the company to 11.54%, although only four VHH bus lines (120,122,124 and 224, in the four- and Marschlande ) exit within the zobs. In the 1960s, numerous VHH bus routes began and ended here via Billstedt in the direction of Bergedorf - Geesthacht - Lauenburg / Wentorf / Reinbek, Glinde - Neuschönningstedt - Trittau , via Rahlstedt to Großensee to Trittau, but also via Eidelstedt and Quickborn to Bad Bramstedt / Hohenwestedt and Lutzhorn .
