Zhi Gin Lam in action for HSV II (2011)

The son of a German and a citizen from the former British Hong Kong grew up in the Lohbrügge district and began his career in 1999 at VfL Lohbrügge , which he left in 2003 for SV Nettelnburg / Allermöhe. In 2005 he moved to the youth department of Hamburger SV , where he was active up to and including the 2009/10 season.

For the 2010/11 season , Lam became a permanent member of the second team of HSV (U-23). Lam, who was still in the A-Youth (U-19) squad at the time, had already played two games in the fourth-class regional league for Rodolfo Cardoso's team in the preseason . In his first season in the senior division, Lam quickly developed into a regular player.

At the beginning of the 2011/12 season, Lam was initially back in the squad of the second team. After his U-23 coach Cardoso stepped in as interim coach after the dismissal of the first team coach Michael Oenning on September 19, 2011, he nominated him to the 18-man squad for the Bundesliga game against VfB Stuttgart on September 23, 2011. Lam was in the starting line-up for his Bundesliga debut in a 2-1 away win and received “praise from all sides” for his performance over 65 minutes. On November 17, 2011, Lam signed his first professional contract through June 30, 2015 and became a permanent member of the first team. Until the winter break, further appearances followed, mostly as substitutes. In the second half of the season, Lam only played one game against Borussia Dortmund on matchday 18 . Otherwise he was used again in the U-23.

In test matches in preparation for the 2012/13 season , Lam impressed as a right-back. In the first competitive game of the season in the DFB Cup, he was preferred to Dennis Diekmeier in the position of right-back and is also mentioned in the squad lists as a defender. After two torn muscle fibers in the course of the first half of the season, he lost the connection and was used in the second team to regain match practice. On December 8, 2012, he finally made his comeback in the professional team in a 2-0 home win against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim . Even in the second half of the season he was unlucky with injuries. On September 14, 2013 (5th matchday of the 2013/14 season ) he scored his first Bundesliga goal in the 2: 6 defeat in the away game against Borussia Dortmund with a goal of 2: 1 in the 26th minute. Overall, Lam only came to nine appearances in the Bundesliga during the season due to persistent muscular complaints and a pubic bone inflammation.

At HSV, Lam could not prevail - also due to many injuries. He then moved to the 2nd Bundesliga for SpVgg Greuther Fürth for the 2014/15 season , with whom he signed a three-year contract until June 30, 2017.

After two years in Fürth, Lam moved to Kitchee SC in Hong Kong . There he scored two goals in 31 league games.

After two years at Kitchee SC, Lam moved to R&F (Hong Kong) .

National team

Due to his parentage, Lam would also be eligible to play for the Hong Kong national team. Lam declined an invitation in 2012 because he wanted to play for Germany. In 2011, Lam was appointed to the squad of the German U-20 national soccer team for the first time , but had to cancel because of a cold.
