Woo Ji-Ho (* 14. September 1992 in Seoul , South Korea ), known by the stage name Zico , is a South Korean rapper , record producer and was a member of the boy band Block B .

In addition to his work as a mainstream artist and boy group member, he is still active as an underground rapper and produces K-pop and hip-hop music.

biography

Zico was born on September 14, 1992 in Mapo , Seoul , South Korea and attended Seoul Music High School. In the text of the song Release and in various interviews, he mentioned that he had spent a year in Canada and the People's Republic of China . He also lived in Japan for three years , where he attended an art school.

Underground rapper career

Zico started his career as an underground rapper . As a teenager, he initially used the stage name Nacseo (낙서), which translated means something like scribble .

Zico made his official debut in 2009 with Park Kyung as a duo under the name The Harmonics. They released a single called The Letter . In the same year he joined Stardom Entertainment and released the song Marshmallow with singer IU .

In 2010 he published his first mixtape called Zico on the Block , which met with a positive response, especially in the Korean hip-hop scene.

Publications 2011, Block B

Zico made his debut on April 15, 2011 as a leader and rapper with Block B. He produced the first mini album called Welcome to the Block . After several songs from the album were banned by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and the broadcaster KBS , he said:

“It's not that we don't follow the rules when we produce our songs, but we often felt that our freedom of expression was being restricted. Nevertheless, as the producer and creator of the songs, which are intended for the public, I admit mistakes on my part and will pay more attention to the regulations in the future. "

Zico took part in Hyuna's song Just Follow from her debut album Bubble Pop! and therefore performed with her in Korean music shows from July to August. On November 27th he started the SBS-MTV Show Studio C! to moderate.

2012

On July 21st he performed at the hip hop festival All Force One alongside Korean hip hop stars such as Dok2 and Beenzino. On October 24th he became a presenter of the SBS-MTV show The Show , together with Block B member PO . At the 2012 Mnet Asian Music Awards , he took part in a hip-hop appearance with several famous rappers. In October he released a self-produced mixtape called Zico on the Block 1.5 . In December it was announced that he will produce D-Units new album. He also started studying at the Dong-ah Institute of Media and Art .

2013

In August, Zico was dissed in Deepflows (딥플로우) response to Swings (스윙 스) Disstrack . Zico and Jay Park have been charged with getting into hip hop music just because of the money. Rapper Aphelia released a disstrack called Zicontrol in which Zico and his popularity as an idol were criticized.

On October 18, Zico and Block B member PO ran at Seoul Fashion Week 2014. They presented the fashion of the Dominic's Way brand by designer Song Hye-myung (송혜명). At SBS Gayo Daejeon 2013 he took part in a hip-hop performance together with Tiger JK, Yoon Mi Rae, Bizzy, BAPs Bang Yongguk and Eun Jiwon.

2014

In late May, he attended a fan’s funeral. The girl was a huge Block B fan and died in the Sewol ferry accident. He dedicated a song to her at the Block Bs- 2014 Blockbuster Concert.

In June, Hyomins ( T-ara ) mini album Make Up , which was produced by the Brave Brothers, was released. Since she used texts from Zico's mixtapes, she was accused of plagiarism . She denied these allegations, but still did not mention Zico in her album.

On July 14th, Zico became the new host of the MBC music show Show! Music Core confirmed. He was also a cast member of Fashion King Korea's second season.

He performed together with Dynamic Duo at the 10th anniversary special of M! Countdown , next to Dok2, The Quiett, and Simon D at The Hiphop Festa on October 4th, and at the Hiphopplaya Show Weekend on October 31st.

He hosted the 2014 Asian Song Festival with Super Juniors Leeteuk and Girls Days Minah and performed with Beasts Hyunseung.

On November 7th, Zico's debut single called Tough Cookie was released. He has been criticized for showing the Confederate flag in his music video. He was also heavily criticized for using a homophobic phrase in the lyrics. Zico's record label commented on these allegations, saying that the homophobic statement was not directed against sexual minorities and that Zico did not want to offend anyone. The song reached number 1 on several Korean charts .

He performed with legendary Korean singer Seo Taiji at the 2014 Mnet Asian Music Awards.

2015

On February 13th, Zico released the single Well Done together with Ja Mezz . The song was very successful and topped several Korean charts. In March he provided the music for Beyond Closets 2015 S / S fashion show at New York Fashion Week and graduated from the Dong-Ah Institute for Media and Art with a bachelor's degree.

In February he became the second producer on the Korean rap show Unpretty Rapstar . He produced the song Up All night for candidate Yuk Ji Dam. The chorus of the song was used in the comedy series Gag Concert for several skits . In May it was announced that Zico would produce the entire fourth season of the popular hip-hop show Show Me The Money , teaming up with Hi-Lite Records founder Paloalto.

After Zico's manager caused a car accident while he was drunk, Zico was supposed to leave the show first, but since he was not the driver of the car and was declared innocent by the police, he did not have to leave the show.

The song (거북선) Turtle Ship , which Zico had produced for the show, reached number 1 in several Korean charts after its release on July 31st. Shortly afterwards, the song Moneyflow also reached number 1. Zico participated not only as a producer, but also as a rapper in the song. The single Fear was released on August 21 and reached number 1 in all eight charts.

In October, Zico released his own version of Up All Night under the name 말해 Yes Or No , together with rappers Penomeco and The Quiett. In the same month the song Traveler of the girl group f (x) was published, in which Zico took over the rap part. On November 3, he released the song Boys and Girls , which reached number 1 on all eight Korean charts and reached number 1 on the Gaon download and streaming charts in November. A month later he released his first solo mini album called Gallery . The songs Eureka , Pride and Prejudice and Veni Vidi Vici reached the first three places in the Korean charts.

Personal

Zico is Roman Catholic and has the words John the Apostle tattooed on his chest because of his baptismal name (John the Apostle) . He also has a portrait of his mother and the words God saves Paulus tattooed on his chest. He has an older brother named Taewoon who is a former member of the K-pop group Speed .
