The Zionskirchplatz is a pentagonal place in the Rosenthaler suburb , a neighborhood in Berlin district of Mitte . It is located on the approximately 53 meter high Veteranenberg , an elevation on the southwestern edge of the Barnim plateau and is registered as a garden monument with the number 09010210 in the Berlin State Monument List.
history
The Zionskirchplatz originated in the development of the new Berlin district based on the Hobrecht plan of 1862 in the Division XI as Place D . In accordance with the ideas of the Berlin magistrate, the garden architect Joseph Pertl was commissioned to design the striking intersection of five streets in an appealing way, at the same time as the neighboring Arkonaplatz . With the establishment of the Zionskirche (1866–1873) in the center of the square it got its name in December 1866. The square was designed as a decorative square with small pavement and decorative strips made of dark basalt stones , in which marble star ornaments mark the entrances to the interior of the square. Around the church, four densely planted rows of linden trees and strips of lawn in between formed a continuous green area. The square was initially protected by a wrought-iron grille that was locked at night .
In 1989 the district office placed a bronze sculpture by Karl Biedermann to the side of the church in honor of the resistance fighter Dietrich Bonhoeffer , who had worked in the church and was later executed by the National Socialists .
In the nearly 150 years since the inauguration of the square, some changes and replanting have been made that deviated greatly from the original design plan. For example, the Berlin Senate had the square redesigned for around 1.5 million euros in 2013/2014 , with the historic routing with its visual axes being restored and tree replanting with linden and chestnut trees .
use
In addition to strollers and churchgoers, the square directly in front of the church entrance is regularly used by an organic market . When the weather is nice, the parish opens a café in front of the church on Sunday afternoons .

In: Allgemeiner Wohnungs-Anzeiger together with address and business manual for Berlin , 1868, part 5, p. 71. The print production required a longer lead time, forms had to be filled out, collected and evaluated. Then the texts had to be set and printed, which is why the statement December 1866 for the naming of the square appears credible.
