action

Young saxophonist Pete Hammond Jr. takes the bus from his hometown of Milwaukee to New York City in hopes of making a career as a jazz musician . Looking for a job, he meets the dancer Peggy Brown, who makes her living as a model. She came to New York some time ago, also hoping for a stage career. She has now lost all illusions and has become cynical. Due to rent debts, she has just been given notice of the apartment that has just been rented to Pete Hammond. He offers her to live with him and to contribute to the rent because he cannot actually afford the apartment. She accepts his offer. During an audition for a band, he is sent away to get beer for the band. When he returns, he finds out that his saxophone has been stolen.

Shortly thereafter, he received an offer to play a saxophonist on a crusader, which he could not accept because he had no instrument. Peggy, who works in a taxi dance hall and owes Nelly, who runs the bar, agrees to work for Nelly as a prostitute. She then gives Pete the money to buy a new saxophone. When Pete becomes suspicious, she assures him that everything is in order.

Pete writes to Peggy every day on the cruise. When he comes back after a month, she wants to quit her job with Nelly, but Nelly doesn't want to let her go and blackmails her by telling Pete how she makes her money. But Pete, who loves Peggy, takes his wages, sells watches and saxophones, and pays her debts. He confesses to her that he had three "affairs" on the ship and has to promise her never to take part in a cruise again.
