The dwarf valerian ( Valeriana supina ) is a perennial plant from the subfamily of the valerian family (Valerianoideae).
features
The habit of dwarf valerians is very different from that of other valerian species. It has runners-like , horizontally growing shoots from which 5 to 10 cm high side branches rise. As a result, it forms low cushions with an extension of typically 10 to 30 cm in diameter.
The pale pink flowers with a crown about 5 mm long sit tightly in cape- shaped inflorescences , and not, as in the case of the other valerian species, in extensive cymes .
The clearly ciliated leaves are always entire. They are inversely egg-shaped or spatulate, that is, wider in the upper section than in the lower. Usually the flanks of the leaves are curved upwards in a U-shape.
Flowering time is from July to August.
The chromosome number of the species is 2n = 16.

Occurrence
The dwarf valerian occurs exclusively in the Eastern Alps (up to Graubünden ), usually at altitudes between 1500 m and 2800 m above sea level. It prefers limestone soil and grows on limestone rubble or in snow valleys . It is a character species of the Thlaspietum rotundifolii, but also occurs in societies of the Arabidion caeruleae. The distribution area includes Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy and Slovenia. In the Allgäu Alps, it rises in the Tyrolean part of the Hohe Licht up to 2550 m above sea level.
In Austria scattered in the federal states of Styria , Carinthia , Salzburg , Tyrol and Vorarlberg . In Upper Austria only on the Dachstein .
