The dwarf water lily ( Nymphaea tetragona ) is a species of the water lily genus ( Nymphaea ).

description

This perennial herbaceous plant lives with its rhizomes and roots constantly under water, leaf blades and flowers are on the water surface. The submerged rhizomes grow upright and unbranched. The leaf blades, floating on the water surface, arise from them on long petioles. The shield-shaped leaf blade is round to slightly oval, 5 to 12 inches long and 3.5 to 9 inches wide, cut deeply heart-shaped up to the stem; the leaf margins are parallel to each other at the base of the blade.

The flowers, which lie on long flower stalks on the water surface, bloom from June to September. The slightly fragrant, large, star-shaped, hermaphrodite flowers are 3 to 7.5 cm in diameter. The joint between the sepals and ovary is square, which is what the scientific name refers to. The four free sepals are green. The eight to 17 free petals are white, pink in the center of the flower. Inward, a smooth transition from petals to stamens can be observed. The 30 to 70 stamens are yellow-orange. The stamens are wider than the anthers . The carpels are fused, the scar ends in five to eight scar lobes.

The spherical fruits have a diameter of 2 to 2.5 cm. The smooth, round seeds measure about 2 to 3 × 1.5 to 2 millimeters and are therefore about 1.3 to 1.5 times longer than they are wide.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28, 66, 84 or 112.

distribution

The dwarf water lily is widespread in the boreal zone and is found in northern Europe , northern Asia, and northern North America . In East Asia, their distribution extends further south in the high elevations of the mountains. The distribution area includes Finland, northern European Russia, Siberia, Japan, Korea, China, Russia's Far East, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, India, Myanmar, Alaska and Canada. The species is extinct in Washington.

sorts

Dwarf water lily ( Nymphaea tetragona )
Red dwarf water lily ( Nymphaea 'Pygmaea rubra')

The dwarf water lily is used as an ornamental plant . It is suitable for sunny locations up to a water depth of 15 to 30 cm.

The synonym Nymphaea pygmaea (Salisbury) WTAiton is also used in trade. This name is also used for a water lily from the subtropical to tropical climates in China , Japan and Vietnam . The species Nymphaea glandulifera , native to South America, is called the “green dwarf water lily ”.

Some varieties:

  • Nymphaea 'Pygmaea Alba': flowers pure white
  • Nymphaea 'Pygmaea Rubra': flowers carmine-red. Grows well in cooler climates. Numerous small crosses of water lilies are available under the name 'Pygmaea Rubra'. Like 'Helvola', it is a Marliac variety , which is indicated in the original description as pink.
  • Nymphaea 'Helvola' (Syn .: 'Pygmaea Helvola'): The flowers are light yellow. This variety is a little sensitive to frost, the flowers only open in full sunshine. It's an intersection.
