Melanie Jayne Lynskey (b. May 16 1977 in New Plymouth, New Zealand) is an actress best known for starring in Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures and for playing Rose on Two and a Half Men.
Biography
Career
In 1992, at 15, Lynskey was cast alongside Kate Winslet in Heavenly Creatures, despite never having acted professionally. Directed by Peter Jackson, the film received worldwide acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Despite a three-year hiatus (during which time she relocated to Hollywood), Lynskey made a return to acting with Foreign Correspondents, an independent drama co-starring Wil Wheaton. She then appeared alongside Drew Barrymore in Ever After, a career milestone which led to a string of parts in various features, including Detroit Rock City, The Cherry Orchard, But I'm a Cheerleader and Jerry Bruckheimer's Coyote Ugly.
After a headlining role in Snakeskin, a road movie set in New Zealand, Lynskey appeared in Stephen King's Rose Red, which was followed by supporting turns alongside Katie Holmes in Abandon and Reese Witherspoon in Sweet Home Alabama. She then joined Hayden Christensen in the Golden Globe-nominated Shattered Glass and guest-starred on The Shield, before landing a recurring stint on the Emmy Award-winning Two and a Half Men in 2003, as Charlie Sheen's endearingly offbeat neighbor, Rose.
Recent projects have included Clint Eastwood's Oscar-nominated Flags of Our Fathers, CineVegas prizewinner Park and the acclaimed but short-lived Drive, which saw Lynskey starring alongside Nathan Fillion. She also appeared in CBS's Lonesome Dove prequel, Comanche Moon, and guest-starred on Psych. Next up is a starring turn in rom-com Show of Hands.
Personal life
Lynskey married New Jersey-born actor Jimmi Simpson - whom she met when they worked together on Rose Red - on April 14, 2007, in Queenstown, New Zealand. They live together in Los Angeles with their dog, Mouse (a chihuahua-dachshund mix).
A vegetarian, Lynskey has four siblings; three younger brothers and a younger sister.
One of her best friends is Emily Deschanel.
Quotes
- "You always see those movies that have amazing casts, and it's funny to be in one of them. It's a list of all these fantastic people--and, oh, me as well."
- "If I ever have time off and don't know what's coming up next, I get really nervous and think, Oh well, it's probably over."
- (on working with Charlie Sheen) "We get on terribly. I can't stand him. No, he's great. He's really quiet and shy and sweet."
- (on Sheen's reaction to her New Zealand accent) "He turned around and said, "What's this, uh, voice? What are you doing?" I said, "I'm just talking." Then he said, "Hmmm. Is that some kind of actor-y thing?" "
- "The first audition I ever did, the casting director said, "I don't know why you're here. You're never going to work in America. You don't look right. You don't have the right kind of personality. I don't even know if you can do an American accent. Maybe you can try England." "
- "(...) I was in Montreal and this girl came up to me and said, "Has anyone ever told you that you look like Melanie Lynskey?" "
