Pasukan Gerakan Khas (English: Special Operations Force;PGK) is an elite arm and high profile counter terrorism unit of the Royal Malaysian Police (Malay: Polis Di-Raja Malaysia) which includes Komando 69 (VAT 69) and Unit Tindakan Khas (UTK; Special Actions Unit).

History

Organization

Previously separate entities, both VAT 69 and UTK were amalgamated into the PGK on 20 October 1997, launched by 6th Inspector General of Police, Tan Sri Norian Mai. However, VAT 69 and UTK are still operational as separate units. UTK is now Pasukan Gerakan Khas Detachment A and VAT 69 has been deputized to Pasukan Gerakan Khas Detachment B (similar to the TNI/AU Indonesia's Detachment Bravo).

Currently based at Police Headquarters in Bukit Aman, Kuala Lumpur, they report to the Internal and Public Security (Malay: Keselamatan Dalam Negeri / Ketenteraman Awam) Director.

With the growing threat of terrorism since the September 11th attacks, this unit has increasingly adapted itself to conduct counter-terrorism duties. The PGK has also forged closer relations with the Malaysian Armed Forces Grup Gerak Khas, PASKAL and PASKAU, that enable them to enforce security within Malaysia's borders.

Roles and Functions

The unit is well trained in Close Quarters Battle (CQB), Hostage Rescue (HR), HALO/HAHO, Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD), unconventional warfare, sabotage, intelligence, foreign language, assaults / rescues within buildings, oil rigs, cargo ships and urban terrain (e.g. FIBUA), assaults on trains, airborne and aircraft, reconnaissance, helo casting, hover jump, fast roping techniques, sniper, handling K9 unit, unarmed combat, karate do, police martial arts (Malay:Seni Silat Polis), defusing bombs, basic underwater demolitions (BUD), combat diving, vehicle assault and parachuting just to name a few.

UTK is primarily a SWAT-type unit, with a difference; they operate mostly in plainclothes. The unit operates within the towns and cities in Malaysia dealing with armed criminals. VAT 69 operatives however, are jungle warfare specialists in line with their original purpose of fighting the communist threat in 1969 and during the insurgency years. Originally trained by the SAS, VAT 69 conducts both warfare and deep reconnaissance missions. UTK members wear maroon berets while VAT 69 proudly wears the sand coloured beret given to them by their founding trainers, the 22nd SAS.

In November 14, 2006, then is a first history of PGK when the 2 proudly berets of this unit will titled as Royal Berets from Yang Dipertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Syed Putera Jamalullail in Police Training Centre (PULAPOL) Jalan Semarak, Kuala Lumpur.

Training and Selection

PGK regularly trains abroad with units such as the British SAS, Indonesian BRIMOB, Singaporean STAR, Australian Special Air Service , FBI HRT, US Green Berets and the US Special Operation Command Pacific Unit (SOCPAC).

On 10 December 2003, the Inspector General of Police, Tan Sri Mohd Bakri bin Haji Omar launched the training program between USSOCPAC and the Royal Malaysian Police paramilitary unit - Pasukan Gerakan Am (General Operations Force) at the PGA Training School in Ulu Kinta, Perak. At the end of this inaugural training programme, it is believed that only 42 out of the 194 trainees passed. At a recent VAT69 Basic Training Course (May - September 2006), only 44 out of 91 policemen managed to complete this gruelling initial phase programme.

3 days after the July 2nd, 2000 Al-Mau'nah arms heist incident in Bukit Jenalek, Operation Subuh was launched. Led by ASP Abd Razak bin Mohd Yusof, personnel from PGK Detachment B along with an ATM senior officer, Lt Gen. Zaini Mohamad Said were sent to Sauk to negotiate with the Al-Ma'unah leader, Mohamed Amin bin Mohamed Razali.

Amin, along with his comrades were persuaded to drop their arms and surrender to the military. Although most of the group initailly surrendered, negotiations eventually broke down and a bloody firefight ensued. In the end, Special Branch officer Detective Corporal Sanghadevan, Trooper Matthew anak Medan from GGK and a hostage were killed and 19 Al Ma'unah members were arrested. Mohamed Amin, Zahit Muslim and Jamaludin Darus were later sentenced to death and the other 16 were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Operation Api Sawit 2

In September 12, 2002, Ahmad Mohd Arshad or Mat Komando, 37, the leader of Gang 13, then No.1 on the Malaysian Most-Wanted-Criminal list for armed robbery, armed assault and illegal possession of firearms (among others) was known to be hiding in a Kampung Hujung Keton, the village in the state of Kedah on the west coast of the Malay Peninsular.

Armed with intelligence gathered from surveillance and villagers, 10 police officers from PGK, supported by the PGA, cordoned off the area for the take down.

Sensing the presence of law enforcement officials, Mat Komando opened fire and in the ensuing shoot-out, was shot in the head and killed. The death also brings to four the number of Gang 13 members shot dead.
