HP Pavilion is a line of personal computers produced by Hewlett-Packard and introduced in 1995. The name is applied to both desktops and laptops for the Home and Home Office product range. The application to both desktops and laptops is unusual because most manufacturers treat their desktop and laptop products as separate product lines. For example, Dell has two desktop lines, Inspiron and OptiPlex, and four separate laptop lines, Inspiron, Latitude, Precision and Dell XPS.

When HP merged with Compaq, they took over Compaq's existing naming rights agreement. As a result, HP sells both HP and Compaq-branded machines. One can order a computer directly from the factory over the internet (see www.hp.com ) or over the phone. One can also customize the computer by choosing what specifications are desired, known as a CTO option. In Europe, HP allows the option of installing Ubuntu on certain laptops instead of Microsoft Windows[citation needed].

Current models

As of October 2007, HP offers nine notebook lines which carry the Pavilion name. These are customizable in the US and Canada while elsewhere a wide variety of different models with different setups are provided.

Current notebook models are as follows:

  • 20 inch: HDX9000
  • 17 inch: dv9500t, dv9500z (also known as dv9500us and dv9500ca in Canada)
  • 15.4 inch: dv6500t, dv6500z and dv6000z (also known as dv6500us, dv6500ca, and dv6000ca in Canada)
  • 14.1 inch: dv2500t, dv2500t Broadband Wireless series
  • 12.1 inch: tx1000z tablet PC

Note that "t" in the model number ("us" in Canada) represents Intel models, while "z" ("ca" in Canada) represents AMD models. As for HP Pavilion HDX, Intel is used.

Customizable features include: a webcam, unique HP Imprint Finish, choice of four different Windows Vista operating systems (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business or Ultimate on some models), 6, 12, 8, or high capacity 8 cell battery (depending on the model), ATI, Nvidia, and Intel graphic cards, and processors such as the Intel Celeron M, Intel Core 2 Duo, AMD Sempron, or AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core processor.

HP also offers eleven customizable desktops that carry the Pavilion name.

Criticisms

  • They have been known to emit an annoying high-pitched whine, identified as being caused by the CPU alternating between low-power and high-power states. [1]
  • Some models of Pavilion laptop have been criticized as having faulty power jacks, which separate from the motherboard under normal use[1][2].
  • The power of its 6 Cell Battery is not optimal and HP has introduced another battery option with higher capacity.
  • Options for high resolution screens are generally lower resolution than HP's competitors.
  • They are known to contain toxic substances such as brominated fire retardants.
