Personal Information

  • Hello and welcome to Jza84's user page.
  • I live in Greater Manchester and my interests are geography, geneaology, politics and ethnic studies.
  • I have been contributing to the English language Wikipedia since December 2005 (first as an anon, then under a different username).
  • I was granted administrator status on 21 May 2008. I'm open to recall.[1]
  • I mainly contributute to articles related to the WikiProjects I participate with, particularly (but by no means exclusive to) local and national geography.
  • A lover of consistency across articles, my personal aims include producing outstanding articles about places and things important to me and my life, and encourage a greater ethos of teamwork at Wikipedia.
  • Amongst other things, I'm currently working on getting each place in Greater Manchester and Northern England to have a lead photograph (static image) depicting the local landscape or a local landmark in the infobox. My favourites so far have included Audenshaw, Barnsley, Hattersley, Ancoats, Dalton-in-Furness, Middleton, Hulme and Bollington.
  • I'm not perfect.[2]

Achievements I'm proud of

I've significantly contributed to a number of featured and good articles, particularly:

A Barnstar!
Oldham is a large town in Greater Manchester, England. It lies amongst the Pennines on elevated ground between the rivers Irk and Medlock, 6.9 miles (11.1 km) northeast of the city of Manchester, and 5.3 miles (8.5 km) south-southeast of Rochdale. Oldham rose to prominence during the 19th century as an international centre of textile manufacture, becoming "one of the most important centres of cotton and textile industries in England".

A Barnstar!
Shaw and Crompton is a town and civil parish within the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, in Greater Manchester, England. Historically a part of Lancashire, Shaw and Crompton rose to prominence during the Industrial Revolution as a major centre of cotton spinning and textile manufacturing in the 19th century. According to the national press, it had more millionaires per capita at its zenith than any other town in the world.

A Barnstar!
Manchester is a city and metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester, England. The City of Manchester metropolitan borough, which has city status, has a population of 452,000. The Peterloo Massacre occurred on 16 August 1819 when cavalry were ordered to charge into a crowd peacefully protesting for parliamentary reform. It resulted in the deaths of 15 and injuries to 600–700 men women and children. The event was largely discounted by the authorities, although it has recently been described as Manchester's Tiananmen Square, and an event in the history of the United Kingdom most in need of a proper memorial.

I am also very proud of the following:

  5. ^ For clarity (as I'm sometimes attacked for this!), although I have this as a statement here out of courtesy for other users, this does not equate to me seeking to have Wikipedia adopt a "Glasgow is a British city in the Scotlandshire part of Great Britain, in the United Kingdom" approach - far from it - I merely support the United Kingdom in its present form, and that's probably owing to me being an Anglo-Scot, which I can't change!
That said, in geographical contexts, I am likely remove usage of the "UK" or "United Kingom" and swap it for a consituent country. This is inline with a long-standing consensus, and also the approach taken in every other major encyclopedia and gazetter.
I will change the first occurance of "UK" for "United Kingdom" if I see it (per MOS:ABBR).
In biographical contexts, I work in the spirit of WP:UKNATIONALS, and to the letter of WP:MOSFLAG, usually using "sub-nationality" in prose, and "British" in infoboxes.
My opinion on it all? - the sooner people recognise the UK in terms of Anglo-Celtic, rather than Anglocentric, the better. :)
