(11775) Koehler is an asteroid of the inner main belt , which was discovered on October 16, 1977 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery took place during the 3rd Trojan survey, during which Tom Gehrels surveyed field plates recorded by the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory at the University of Leiden , 17 years after the start of the Palomar-Leiden- Surveys .

The asteroid was named on May 1, 2003 after the German biologist Georges JF Köhler (1946–1995). In 1984 Köhler received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine together with Niels Kaj Jerne and César Milstein "for theories about the specific structure and control of the immune system and for the discovery of the principle of the production of monoclonal antibodies ". The asteroid of the outer main belt (11774) Jerne was named after Niels Kaj Jerne on the same day, and the asteroid of the outer main belt (11776) Milstein was named after César Milstein on May 1, 2003 . The comet C / 1977 R1 (Kohler) , on the other hand, bears the name of its discoverer, the Californian astronomer Merlin Kohler .
