(15171) Xandertielens is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .
The asteroid was named on August 31, 2012 after the Dutch astronomer Xander Tielens (* 1953), who works as a professor at the observatory of the University of Leiden and published groundbreaking studies on the role of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in interstellar gas and dust clouds.
