(16522) Tell is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on January 15, 1991 by the German astronomer Freimut Börngen at the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg ( IAU code 033) in the Tautenburg Forest in Thuringia .
The asteroid is a member of the Ursula family, a group of asteroids named after (375) Ursula .
It was named on November 11, 2000 after the Swiss freedom fighter Wilhelm Tell , who became a central figure of identification of various, both conservative and progressive circles in the Confederation . Tell has been Switzerland's national hero since the end of the 19th century .
