(231307) Peterfalk is an asteroid of the main outer belt discovered by the French computer scientist and amateur astronomer Jean-Claude Merlin on January 28, 2006 at the fully automatic Ritchey-Chrétien 81 cm telescope of the Tenagra II Observatory in Nogales , Arizona ( IAU code 926 ) has been discovered. The telescope was able to head for Merlin from France when it was discovered. Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid had already been made in October 2004 with the provisional designation 2004 TE 322 at the Steward Observatory's remote station on Kitt Peak .

The asteroid is a member of the Koronis family, a group of asteroids named after (158) Koronis . The timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (231307) Peterfalk are almost identical to those of the larger one, assuming the absolute brightness of 13.7 compared to 16.8, asteroids (7719) 1997 GT 36 .

(231307) Peterfalk was named on January 12, 2011 after the American actor Peter Falk , who was best known for his leading role in the crime series Columbo .
