(2849) Shklovskij is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on April 1, 1976 by the Russian astronomer Nikolai Stepanowitsch Tschernych at the branch of the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj ( observatory code 095) near the city of Simferopol .

The asteroid is named after the Soviet astronomer and astrophysicist Iossif Samuilowitsch Schklowski (1916–1985), who is considered a pioneer in the exploration of SETI and who was one of the organizers of the first conferences at the Bjurakan Observatory on possibly existing extraterrestrial civilizations in the 1960s .
