(42697) Lucapaolini is an asteroid of the main belt , on 1 June 1998 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory ( IAU code 809) of the European Southern Observatory in Chile was discovered.
The asteroid was named after the Italian racing cyclist Luca Paolini (* 1977) on February 22, 2016 .
