Makotoshinkai or - nomenclature for asteroids - (55222) Makotoshinkai is an asteroid in the outer field of the main asteroid belt . It was discovered on September 12, 2001 by the American astronomer Roy Tucker at the Goodricke-Pigott Observatory in Tucson , Arizona .

On March 31, 2018, the asteroid was named Makotoshinkai after the Japanese writer and animator Makoto Shinkai . His best-known work up to the time of the award is the film Your Name , released in 2016 . - Been yesterday, today and forever where a comet is an important part of the plot.
