(6830) Johnbackus is a main outer belt asteroid discovered on May 5, 1991 by Japanese astronomers Satoru Ōtomo and Osamu Muramatsu in Kiyosato ( IAU code 894) in Yamanashi Prefecture .
The celestial body was named on June 1, 2007 after the American computer scientist John W. Backus (1924-2007), who headed the development team for Fortran , the first high-level programming language ever actually implemented .
