(sic!) is the seventh studio album by the German oi and punk band Broilers . It was released on February 3, 2017 via the band's own music label Skull & Palms Recordings together with Warner Music Group . The word sic means “like this and not otherwise” and should also be understood metaphorically as an album title. The history of the band could seem flawed here and there, but the way it is, everything is right, “one way and no other”.

The cover is in black and orange tones. In the upper third are the album titles in orange on the left, in the middle there is Skull & Palms Recordings presented in capital letters in white , below with a larger font size first BROILERS and below (sic!) . The lower two thirds show the band standing in front of a wall. They all wear black T-shirts and black jackets. Sammy Amara , who is standing in the middle, is holding a mug in his hand. The booklet, in which all texts are contained, is also in black, orange and white. Sammy Amara is responsible for the artwork and Robert Eikelpoth and Alexander Wurm for the photographs. Usually there are large black and white photographs that illustrate the texts, sometimes many small ones that look like snapshots. Only on the side of The Best of All Times and Something Inside Me are small color photos of the band. My family is designed with a color photo of the five tattooed hands.

In addition to the CD in digipak , it is also available as a preorder in vinyl and as a limited deluxe edition with the documentation and the story behind the creation of the album on DVD. They are also available in a fan box which, in addition to the DVD, contains many small additions, and a piece of the original backdrops of the Noir Tour.

Subjects and title list

The album is more political than the last album Noir (Broilers album) . The band sees itself as a mouthpiece, wants to position itself and have an opinion.

The first song on the album is about the relationship to Germany , to one's own country. With "You are only a country, you do not rule me," Amara addresses the attitude that everyone can take towards their country. A country everyone was born to by chance. He warns that patriotism can turn into nationalism very quickly . For the Broilers, there is only a very fine line between the two ways of looking at things, the two worldviews .

They also take a political stance with the Bitter Manifesto : "I sit in my dark room, crooked back, poor poet, over a pile of papers, spit an angry pamphlet."

In No Hymns Today they warn against fascism . In the lyrics it says: “In a pile you light books, the art leaves the country, the music degenerates, the rest is known to us.” Amara received inspiration for this song from the writer and poet from the 18th century Johann Gottfried Seume who was once forced to serve in the army even by recruiters. He is given the quote “bad people have no songs”.

The best of all time is autobiographical . He remembers the youth of the band: "Civilian service and the armed forces, I would rather take out the garbage than a gun, study had to wait, first I drove pizza and tried to breathe".

You up there remember not only all the deceased, well-known "heroes", but also all those people whom the individual would like to think about individually.

Also to the roots is autobiographical. Sammy Amara personally had the experience of being mistaken for a shoplifter because of his appearance. This is hurtful for the person concerned and shows that he is not just seen as a person, but is put in a drawer.

In an interview with jumpradio.de, Amara says when it all began , who also warns against racism and nationalism: “I fear that many people who are now at Pegida and co. run along, not see in which direction it can go. It would just be bad if something very bad results from it and they say at some point, but I couldn't imagine that happening, I didn't want that. But we have history books. And then at some point we have to put up with the question from our children, why didn't you do anything? Why did you let that happen? You knew everything. "

What to believe in is written for Generation Z , for whom, according to Amara, the doors are open, but who are full. Who want to present something to the outside world, in contrast to Generation Y , to which he belongs. They lack empathy in real life because they seem too focused on social networks .

resonance

Matthias Weckmann from metal-hammer.de writes that the album is again much more socio-political than the previous album. Musically it is more straightforward for him and impressed with authenticity, but it would not have the hit density and variety of styles that he sees on the album Noir. It is clear, as he writes: "Sammy Amara continues to be one of the most charismatic figures in this country."

Whiskey-soda.de sums up: “The Broilers sound (sic!) More directly than ever. Taking a stance has always been important, but it has to be a pain in the ass to end in such clear lines as on this record. It goes without saying that one cannot cast such statements in Schunkel hymns. (Sic!) Has become a varied work, to the point, passionate and different. Different than one would have expected. The Broilers make it clear with (sic!) With whom (or rather with whom not) they of course want to dance to the best songs on the old tapes at their party. "

The author of toughmagazine.de writes: “My conclusion is more than positive, because the songs are extremely punk-rock ... I wouldn't have expected that after the“ Noir ”release. In addition to the excellent titles, the artwork is also more than first class and therefore I got full marks! With many songs you can hear that musically something is being pushed back and that is exactly what "many" fans wanted - everything was done right! "

In its positive criticism, Neckbreaker.de especially emphasizes the art of German poetry, which Amara used again. With right-wing populism , which is currently growing in strength , the band, with Nur ein Land , made clear objections right from the first song: “What do you want to tell me? What am I supposed to feel? … You are just a country - you don't rule me! ”In addition to haunting political messages reminding of the blackest chapter in German history ( No Hymns Today ), the album also features songs like you up there , a memento of missing, because people who died too early. Musically, the lyrics are packed with an authentic rock beat and a little bit of ska here and there .

Kai Butterweck from laut.de introduces his statement with the words: " (Sic!) Presents itself as a coherent, powerfully produced punk rock work." In terms of content, there is also nothing to complain about. They took up (Sic!) Topics that most of the greats of the national pop industry were kissing. They made people think and presented the extended middle finger to every opponent of peace and freedom.

The magazine Visions did without a review and stated: “Our 7/12 point review on Noir was not euphoric enough for the Düsseldorf stadium punks. They asked us not to discuss their new album (Sic!) Any more, let alone to check the sound. We were happy to comply with the request. "
