The Aegean Ragwurz ( Ophrys argolica subsp. Aegaea ) is a subspecies of the Argolic Ragwurz ( Ophrys argolica ) from the kind of Ragwurzen ( Ophrys ) in the family of orchid (Orchidaceae). It occurs only on a few Greek islands.

Vegetative characteristics

The Aegean Ragwurz is a perennial herbaceous plant that usually reaches heights of 10 to 20 (7.5 to 30) centimeters. As a permanent organ, it forms tubers .

Generative characteristics

The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and threefold. The lip measures 11 to 14 × 16 to 20 millimeters. It is dark maroon in color, the middle field is lighter red-orange-brown. With the exception of the outer edge and the middle, it is densely brownish-brown-violet, velvety hairy. The hair on the shoulders is sometimes a little lighter. The hallmark of the Aegean ragwort is the drawing on the lip, which consists of two separate wedges.

Ecology and phenology

In Ophrys argolica subsp. aegaea is a tuber geophyte . The flowering time is in March.

Occurrence

Ophrys argolica subsp. aegaea occurs on Karpathos , Amorgos and possibly also on Kasos . It grows on wasteland, on Phrygana , in pine forests, in olive and carob groves at altitudes of 150 to 850 meters.
