Écoquenéauville is a town and commune Déléguée in the French commune of Sainte-Mere-Eglise with 78 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy .
geography
The place is located in the Cotentin , 2.5 kilometers southeast of the canton capital Sainte-Mère-Église, 8 kilometers west of Utah Beach and twelve kilometers northwest of Carentan on the European route 3 and the D67 in the regional nature park Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin .
history
1793 received Écoquenéauville in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) the status of a municipality (as Ecoqueneanville ) and 1801 the right to local self-government (as Leoqueneauville ). 1972 Écoquenéauville and Sébeville of Turqueville were incorporated. The newly created community was called Criqueville-au-Plain . As early as 1979, Écoquenéauville and Sébeville separated from Turqueville and became independent communities again.
With effect from January 1, 2016, the former communes of Beuzeville-au-Plain , Chef-du-Pont , Écoquenéauville and Foucarville were merged with the commune of Sainte-Mère-Église, creating a commune nouvelle with this name. The municipality of Écoquenéauville belonged to the arrondissement of Cherbourg and the canton of Sainte-Mère-Église .

From 1793 to 1806 the population increased, at the same time it reached its highest level of 242 inhabitants. Thereafter the population decreased until 1990.
Attractions
In the hamlet of Le Grand Hameau there is a 16th century farm with stables that were built in 1736. The oven was built in 1761 and a sundial bears the year 1762. In 1769 the main building was enlarged.
The Saint-Laurent church dates from the 14th century. It was built in place of a building from the 12th century, the foundations of which it partially uses, and parts of the west facade come from the older church. The bell tower was enlarged in 1761. In the church there is a painted statue of the Virgin and Child from the last quarter of the 14th century. It was classified as a Monument historique (historical monument) in 1981 . The Françoise-Barbe bell was cast in 1737. It was donated by the then Seigneur of the place Bernard François Cadot, Marquis of Sébeville, Écoquenéauville, Boutteville, Andoville, Knight of the Ordre royal et militaire de Saint-Louis , and his wife, Dame Barbe Auzeray de Courvadon.
