Émile Eddé

Émile Eddé ( Arabic إميل أده; * May 5, 1884 in Damascus ; † September 28, 1949 ) was a Lebanese politician of the Maronite faith.

Life

Eddé studied law in Aix-en-Provence and later worked as a lawyer in Beirut . During the First World War he was one of the co-founders of the Légion d'Orient of the French army. Eddé was Prime Minister of Lebanon, under the French League of Nations mandate , from October 11, 1929 to March 25, 1930 , and in 1936 he founded the Lebanese party Bloc National . He was president of the country from 1936 to 1941 and resigned due to the policies of the Vichy government . On November 22, 1943, he was again acting head of state for one day.

His sons Raymond Eddé (1913–2000) and Pierre Eddé (1921–1997) were politicians.
