Habib Pacha es-Saad or Habib Pascha El-Saad ( Arabic حبيب باشا السعد Habib Bascha as-Sad , DMG Ḥabīb Bāšā as-Saʿd ; * 1867 ; †  1942 ) was a Lebanese politician.

Life

Habib Pacha es-Saad came from a wealthy Maronite family and was educated at a Jesuit school in Beirut . He made a career in the Ottoman administration of the Mutesarriflik Mount Lebanon . After the First World War , the victorious powers France and Great Britain brought the Arab regions of the Ottoman Empire under their rule contrary to agreement and had secured this through a League of Nations mandate . Es -Saad, briefly appointed governor of Lebanonberg under the rule of King Feisal in 1920 , was deposed by the English, but was confirmed a little later by the French administration of Lebanon. Habib es-Saad campaigned for the independence of Lebanon from Syria in the following years and was Prime Minister of Lebanon from August 10, 1928 to May 9, 1929 as the successor of his relative Béchara el-Khoury . Under his government there was a reduction in tariffs and a reform of the constitution. He was later named President of Lebanon under the French League of Nations mandate, which he held from January 30, 1934 to January 20, 1936. Habib Pacha es-Saad died in 1942.
