Ayub Thabit

Ayub Thabit ( French Ayoub Tabet ; Arabic أيوب ثابت Ayub Thabit , DMG Ayyūb Ṯābit ; * 1884 in Beirut ; † 1951 ) was a Lebanese politician of Protestant denomination.

Life

Ayub Thabit was of Maronite origin but converted to the evangelical faith. From 1905 he studied medicine in the United States and stayed in Paris in 1913/14 . Once again in the United States during the First World War , he returned to Lebanon after the end of the war.

Under the League of Nations mandate , he became Minister of the Interior in 1928. From January 30, 1936 to January 5, 1937 he was Prime Minister of Lebanon . The military government of " Free France " under Georges Catroux installed him from March 18 to July 21, 1943 as President of Lebanon . At the same time he held the post of Prime Minister for the second time from March 22 to July 21, 1943. Ayub Thabit got caught in the power struggle between the Muslim and Christian parties during his short term in office and was deposed by Catroux's successor, Jean Helleu . He was followed by the more moderate Christian politician Petro Trad as President of Lebanon.
